Indian expatriates top the list in remittances from Qatar
In a not-so-surprising development, Indian expatriates in Qatar have been found to send the most money home on an annual basis.
Qatar’s expatriate population sent home $10.42bn in 2015, with $3.98bn of it being made by Indians living in the country, Qatar Tribune said, citing a report by Pew Research Center.
Remittances to Nepal stood second at $2.02bn.
The overall remittances figure shows a slight increase from $10.01bn in 2014, according to World Bank figures.
In 2015, the Philippines accounted for $1.16bn in remittances from Qatar while Egypt received $1.05bn. While Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans sent home $0.52bn each, Pakistani expatriates remitted $0.42bn.
Worldwide, expatriates sent home an estimated $582bn in 2015, a 2% decline from 2014, when the amount was $592bn. This is the first drop in global remittances since 2009, when they fell by $28bn amid the global financial crisis.
The volume of migrant remittances is closely tied to the increase in migrant populations. The number of international migrants (people who live in a country other than their country of birth) has grown from about 191m in 2005 to more than 243m today.
