India to file mercy petitions for two inmates on death row in Qatar
The Indian government has decided to file a mercy petition on behalf of family members of two Indians whose death sentences were confirmed by Qatar's Court of Cassation earlier this month.
India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed the development yesterday.
The minister, who sought a report from the Indian Ambassador in Qatar, said the embassy has requested the government of Tamil Nadu, from where the two men hail, to help in filing the mercy plea, reported Gulf Times.
Alagappa Subramanian and Chelladurai Perumal are accused of killing an elderly Qatari woman in Doha's New Salata area in 2012.
“I have received report from Qatar reg death sentence for Alagappa Subramaniam and Chelladurai Perumal, both from Tamil Nadu," Sushma Swaraj tweeted earlier.
The death sentence of the third accused, Shivakumar Arasan, was commuted to life imprisonment.
The Indian embassy in Qatar is awaiting a copy of the court verdict to proceed further.
Once the families of the convicts file the petition, it will be forwarded to the Emiri Diwan through the Foreign Office at the Indian Embassy in Qatar.
punchliner : Yep... a tragic case. These morons deserve the death penalty
@Brit remember the killing of Lauren Patterson 2 years ago? raped, stabbed to death and then burnt in the desert !
Don't you think the murderer deserves to be put to death or at least life in prison?
Brite, lifetime imprisonment itself is a good pay for life.
My only question is WHY ?
They have been found guilty of a heineous crime.... They should pay the price
