The first batch of Highway Patrol Police Force that consists of 50 officers and cadets graduated on Thursday, November 11, 2013 at headquarters of Traffic Department. The initiative was organized in collaboration between Ministry of Interior and Ras Gas ltd in the context of priority given by the Ministry and National Committee for Traffic Safety (NCTS) to enhance road safety and ensure responsible and safe driving.
The graduation ceremony was attended by director of Traffic Department Brig. Mohammed Saad Al-Kharji, Secretary of NCTS Brig. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Maliki, traffic safety advisor at the Ministry Adimola Lorry, and from RasGas company Ltd. Chief Safety, Health, Environment & Quality Officer Brett Doherty, Public Affairs Manager Abdulla Hashim, Security & Emergency services manager Faisal Al-Hajiri, road safety advisor John Cling, safety systems head Jive Price, road safety training head at Northwestern University, Chicago Antony Patila and trainers and trainees.
Speaking on the occasion, the Traffic Department director Brig. Al-Kharji said that the new force will support the efforts of the Ministry of Interior in road safety. “The new force will monitor and enforce road safety measure at highways. It includes monitoring of speed limit, keeping space between vehicles and handling accidents and emergency situations”, he said. He added that trainees got theoretical and practical lessons on controlling traffic movement on highways, safe parking and stopping for vehicles on highways as wells training on dealing with public.
Brig. Al-Kharji thanked RasGas Company Ltd for its collaboration with the Ministry in this initiative and said that the training program was implemented globally renowned and prestigious Northwestern University, Chicago. He stressed that this move will play a proactive step in reducing traffic accidents.
Brig. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Maliki, secretary of NCTS said that the initiative comes as part of National Traffic Safety Strategy and thanked RasGas and Northwestern University for their part in the initiative.
Emergency services manager at RasGas Faisal Al-Hajiri said that the company is proud of its partnership with the Ministry to enhance road safety as the new force will definitely will bring positive change in road safety in Qatar stressing that it is part of its corporate social responsibility.
This team has received specialized training in implementing of traffic laws regarding tailgating other vehicles, use of mobile phones, exceeding speed limits, seat belts etc. The officers received advanced skills in the investigation of the accident, advanced methods to interrogate the drivers, preservation of evidence, making specialized report on accidents and ensure the validity of the vehicles
The new patrolling team will use both radar and lidar, (a device used monitor speed using laser) for speed detection. The officers were trained on skills needed to manually control the traffic flow direction and its mechanisms, in addition to the use of tools and methods for data collection.
It is expected that new highway patrol police force will start work in 2014. At the end of the ceremony Brig. Al-Kharji awarded certificates for trainees and exchanged shield with RasGas and Northwestern University. Gifts and appreciation certificates were awarded for lecturers and translators.

More traffic police force?it means more traffic we'll experience by 2014. The good thing is, this is to bring the notice of many foolish drivers esp. in Shamal Road (Take Note). To NCTS:Put 1st lane & 2nd lane as mark as "FAST LANE" so the SUV/Luxury vehicles will stay on that lane & not compromising the others slow speed behicles in danger.
This is going to make a visible change in controlling the speed and tailgating. If maximum speed limit in Qatar is 120 km on any road, then why not block the speedometer of all the cars at this upper limit, that would eliminate all other methods of speed controls.
Are they going to Patrol the Highways meaning Expressways? One thing that really irritates me that slowing moving vehicles occupying the 3rd lane next to the fast lane on a 4 lane highways. Can some tell these idiots to use the empty 1st and 2nd lanes. The Fast lanes are designed for overtaking not for hogging!
We have asked for such a check service some months earlier, that too against the will of young speedsters, but this is what is needed for the Qatari roads. It shall perhpaps make a real difference.
