Gulf region’s biggest man-made forest coming up in Qatar
It may feel strange to use the words Qatar and forest in the same sentence, but that is exactly what is coming up in Qatar soon.
According to Gulf Times, the GCC region’s biggest man-made forest is nearing completion at Umm Salal Ali, an area that lies around 50km outside Doha city.
“The 8.3sqkm forest, which includes two lakes and four islands, is expected be completed by March 20, 2017,” said Rafi Ohanian, operations manager of Nakheel Landscapes.
The project will see the planting of about 950,00 trees in the entire area. The two lakes, spread across 280,000sqm, are located next to each other. Thousands of birds have already started migrating to the area, according to officials.
The forest, situated near the Doha North Sewage Treatment Works plant, uses treated water to irrigate the land.
Once completed, the whole area is expected to be a public recreational park.
“It will be a fantastic experience rarely available anywhere in this part of the world. It will have picnic areas as well as hiking areas. There could be boating and other facilities,” said the official.
This is awesome. Who is excited?

Brit.... Not to worry about Treated Sewage water... in Qatar North, there are enough Sewage to treat, and The Sewage treatment plants are lacking the capacity to hold the raw sewer.
This project will enable the STPs to more output of TSE, then it can intake more raw sewer..
Eco_friendly Project
Wow good news, what a welcome site it would be
Well said Brite! I think the irrigation water would be sourced from the nearby sewage treatment plant. They would used irrigation grade treated water, which is another eco-friendly practice.
Such good news .. More space for enjoyment
I am excited. Trees bring life to a terrain. I do wonder however about the amount of water needed to irrigate such a vast area.
