Qatar has once again been quick to respond to the emergency needs of the brotherly country, Somalia, as hundreds of thousands of Somalis deal with some of the worst floodings the country has witnessed in recent years

Just a few days ago, Qatar had reaffirmed that it will continue to be a key supporter of Somalia and leave no stone unturned in providing the assistance it needs for development.

In line with this view, Qatar sent the first consignment of relief items to aid flood-stricken victims in the various areas of Somalia.

The aid comprised 42 tonnes of relief and medical supplies.

Under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), jointly with the Standing Committee for Rescue and Relief Works and Humanitarian Aids, dispatched the first planeload of assistance, which arrived in Mogadishu yesterday.

HE the Director-General of QFFD Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, and Qatari ambassador to Somalia Hassan bin Hamza Hashem, and Search and Rescue team of Lekhwiya escorted the relief items.

Some members of the Flood Relief Committee appointed by the prime minister of Somalia, as well as the Somali government's ministers and MPs received the Qatari delegation and relief materials.

The Director-General of QFFD said at a joint press conference with the Somali Federal Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Hamza Said Hamza that this is the first batch of Qatari relief items and that another batch is being processed.

He emphasized that Qatar stands with Somalia in the crisis.

The Somali federal minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management thanked Qatar for its prominent role in helping the flood victims in Somalia.

He added that the generous support from Qatar is dedicated to the flood zones such as Beledweyne in Hirshabelle State, El Bardale in the state of Southwest of Somalia, and Bardera in Jubaland state.

The minister also praised the continued support of Qatar to the people and government of Somalia.

Earlier this year, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani promised Qatar's support in balancing the Somali budget with QR73 million.

Additionally, Qatar is also supporting the construction of a new port in central Somalia, a key building block in cooperation in maritime transport between the two nations.
