Eateries at fuel stations told to stop LPG use

Authorities have asked eateries in petrol station premises to immediately stop use of gas cylinders and tanks for cooking food and replace them with electric burners or ovens, reportedly in 10 days.

The move follows the gas tank explosion in Istanbul Restaurant in a petrol station complex near Landmark Mall last Thursday that killed 11 people and injured 35 others.

Sources from another popular restaurant at West Bay Petrol Station said eateries there had also received similar instructions.

Thursdays’ blast led to a public outcry over the safety of restaurants in petrol station premises.

A senior official of the Doha Municipality told this daily that a higher committee has been appointed to study safety issues arising from the existence of too many eateries and fast food outlets in petrol station premises.

Law No. (9) of 2012: "Amendment to Civil Defense Law" (after Vilaggio Fire) requires in its art. 4 "Measures and requirements of Petrol stations operating in the State" the following: Do not use gas in the commercial shops neighboring and surrounding the station in order not to create danger to tanks and filling places.

So it clearly states that all restaurants in the vicinity of Petrol Stations should have changed their systems to electricity and stop using LPG.

This is matter of law enforcement.

Yes Molten, you are right, no need to panic but the other day of the accident; one of our employee told me that he felt the gas smell from the tank and even he reported the information to restaurant owner although what he felt was not right. See how the people wants to live their life forever!

In our office building in Salwa Road (unfortunately not near by petrol station) where are many flats in the first floor for different offices; in the ground floor there is a restaurant and they have LPG storage tank which they fixed on the building top; I think 1,000ltrs. If something goes wrong then whole building with many office employees and offices will be fired in no time. Do you think this is the right place to keep the LPG tank; is it safer?

I think women are forced to work in offices etc so they don't have time to go into the kitchens thus men had to look for food at the petrol pumps .... so it has its roots somewhere else ...

Lets first pin point the root cause then decide ... you wish to solve it or not ... ? ..Wed, 05.03.2014 , 07.36 hrs ...

Cooking resto should not be in the vicinity of any PETROL STATIONS. The authority should have been studying that long time...what if that explosion recently has ignited a thousand liters of fuel and exploded!??? i'm sure nobody would like to imagine how huge could be the damaged around the area..1km radius (minimum).
