Days of ‘Shell Roundabout’ is numbered as another landmark gets set to fall soon

As Qatar grows, it has started to put more emphasis on making its roads and other infrastructure better and more efficient.

But as a country grows more modern, the first casualty is its history. Sure enough, many iconic Qatari roundabouts that people in the country grew up watching has already bitten the dust.

Most of them have been converted into siganlised intersections and another one — Al Wakrah’s Shell Roundabout — is set to join the list soon, reported The Peninsula.

The conversion work is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

The Peninsula quoted a source as saying that the plan is to expand the lanes of the roads leading to the new intersection. The work is expected to last for four months and will be done in several stages. Traffic will be diverted through alternative routes during this time.

There will be four lanes each in both directions and three paths in each direction to turn left. The project will include implementation of gardening works as well as pedestrian corridors, path for cyclists and car parking.

The QR250m project will be done by local contracting companies.

Very good move so far traffic is concerned..Sametime very sad to see that this icon is no more in wakra..Would appreciate officials if it can be taken or move and fix at any four corners of new signal layout

Oh dear! Fellow Wakralites would be very sad to see it go :'(...it has been an iconic landmark for us, and any reference point in Wakra used to start with this symbol.
