Customs officials foil attempts to smuggle in 29kg of marijuana
Thanks to alert officials from the General Authority of Customs (GAC), five attempts to smuggle in marijuana, weighing a total of 29kg, were foiled.
While four attempts were foiled at the Hamad International Airport, the fifth was in the form of a parcel sent from an Asian country.
A Press release from the GAC stated that the bags, seized from Asian passengers, had 6kg, 9kg, 7kg and 3.4kg packs of the contraband respectively. The release noted that the drug was covered with carbon paper.
The fifth shipment, weighing 4kg, was concealed inside a parcel containing files and school textbooks. An employee at the Air Cargo division made the seizure.
There has been a marked increase in attempts to smuggle the drug into Qatar in recent years. But regular training has helped officials raise their alertness levels.
