Council says no to school's "re-registration" fee request

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has forced a private school to cancel its decision to impose "re-registration" fee on students, a local Arabic daily reported on Monday.

The SEC has clarified that no school is permitted to impose registration fee more than once. The fee is charged while enrolling the student for the first time and it should not be repeated at any excuse, said the daily.

The school reportedly asked students who are already on its rolls to pay QR2887 as fee for "re-registration" for the coming academic year (2015-2016). It sent text messages to the parents in this regard.

Several parents lodged complaints with the SEC seeking a reversal of the decision. The SEC promptly responded and asked the school to cancel its decision within 24 hours and inform the parents accordingly, said the daily.

As per the SEC rules, all private schools are required to take permission from the SEC before announcing any fee hike or imposing any additional fee. [The Peninsula]

Brit: Not just in the GCC but even in my country schools are no longer just educational institutions but have become money-making machines. In my country they do not call it a "re-registration" fee. It is called a "donation!" This "donation" is demanded at the time of admissions. The level of "demand" varies from school to school depending on its popularity. If no "donation" is made, no admission is provided. These "donations" to my knowledge, do not get taxed. SEC has taken a great step to stop this nonsense here in Qatar. I can very well feel the pain parents had to bear in paying this "re-registration" fee.

Schools in the GCC are a business. The patents are squeezed because they have no choice due to lack of quality schools

well now i read the full story above and i see some miscommunication schools are asking for advance fees (Deposit) for reservation and that amount will be deducted from tuition fees... Issue here is that they are charging extra amount of money obviously which will deducted from the fees but this immediate upfront amount could be problem for most of parents due to overall low Salaries in the state for foreigners and price hike in House Rents & other Utilities... and if you don’t pay that upfront money your child will not be out of school.... that’s too bad from school side and shows a pure commercial approach which I believe all those schools should be banned and their respective management along with their owners should be banned from running any educational institution in future as well.. Educational institutions should not act like other Commercial business..
