C-Ring road will undergo expansion works

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said yesterday that it will start work on a major overhaul of the C-Ring road, a key artery in Doha on May 1.

The renovations involve a 6.3km stretch of the C-Ring road from the Jabor bin Ahmed intersection (Ramada intersection) to Umm Ghuwailina roundabout ( VIP Roundabout).

The project also includes widening of the C-Ring road from three lanes to four and converting a number of roundabouts to signal-controlled intersections.

The road will get three new U-turns with pedestrian crossings before the intersections. With the addition of the fourth lane, capacity on C-Ring road is expected to increase by approximately 25 percent, Ashghal said in a statement.

Three lanes will remain open to traffic in both directions throughout the construction period and alternative access will be provided to shops and residences in the area.

A signalised pedestrian crossing will be created for all four crossings at each of the new intersections.

To minimise traffic disruptions, the project will be spread over four phases with all works expected to be completed by the second quarter of next year.

Work on each phase will start only after the previous phase is completed, said Ashghal. The project includes construction of permanent roads with new layers of asphalt, traffic signals and street lighting, in addition to upgrading the irrigation pipes and diverting other existing utilities in the area. 

Phase One of the project will extend from VIP Roundabout to midway between Najma and Mansoura intersection and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2014.

As part of this phase, service roads in the area will be closed for traffic. During construction, pedestrian crossings and side-walks will be provided to access shops and residences around the construction area.
