Qatar-based broadcasting giants beIN Sports said it would stop broadcasting programmes on Cable Network Egypt (CNE), its only network in the country, in a move that could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of viewers, reported Qatar Tribune.

“BeIN SPORTS announces that after lengthy negotiations and trying tirelessly to agree on reasonable commercial terms with CNE — including acting in considerable good faith by granting the network multiple extensions to conclude the renewal process — CNE steadfastly refuses to agree on such terms,” said beIN in a statement.

“As such, we are unable to provide our services on CNE as of January 8th, 2019 until such time that CNE agrees on reasonable terms.”

Viewers in Egypt can continue to enjoy beIN CONNECT services on smartphones and other devices by visiting http://www.bein.net/connect, said a release by BeIN Sport.

BeIN provides several sports events via CNE including English Premier League football matches, Champions League football, major tennis tournaments, NBA and Formula One. It is estimated that up to 300,000 people use the service in Egypt.

CNE said in a statement that it was working to resolve the dispute with beIN ‘as soon as possible,’ reported Channel News Asia.

The outage comes the same day that Egypt won the right to host the 2019 African Nations Cup final, edging out South Africa for the tournament after Cameroon was stripped of it last month over concerns at the slow pace of preparations.

It also means Egyptians may not be able to cheer on Egyptian Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who shot to fame in 2018 as one of the world’s biggest football stars.
