Malayalam cinema has in recent times been undergoing a new-generation wave (even though some argue it’s already over).

Nivin Pauly is one of those actors who rode the wave well and continues to remain relevant in the present-day scenario.

His boy-next-door image and cute antics have helped endear himself to the average Malayalee cine-goer. He delivers yet another knockout performance in Oru Vadakkan Selfie.

The movie revolves around Umesh (Nivin), a youth who is not at all serious about his studies. He needs to clear 42 subjects in order to complete his engineering course, which he joined as a knee-jerk reaction in the first place.

Scared of his strict father’s wrath, he runs away to Chennai (modern Madras) to become a filmmaker.

On the train, he meets his neighbor Daisy (Manjima Mohan) and clicks a selfie with her, without her knowledge. He sends the picture to his friend Shaji (Aju Varghese) who uploads it on to Facebook and it goes viral.

The resultant confusion leads to many twists and turns in the tale and it all concludes on a satisfying note. Although a bit preachy towards the end, it’s a well-scripted tale.

The rip-roaring comedy is family-friendly and free of double entendre dialogues. Scriptwriter Vineeth Sreenivasan, who also plays an important part in the film, is at his creative best.

The movie reminds one of the bygone golden age of Malayalam comedy cinema. It’s a clean family entertainer and will be thoroughly enjoyed by children as well.

This new-generation team is here to stay. Go watch them if you want to leave your worries aside for close to three hours.

VERDICT: The film is a triumph of good storytelling. It’s rollicking fun and frolic, but will also satisfy intelligent viewers. 8.5 out of 10.
