Sometimes, life is stranger than fiction. While time travel and fractures in timelines have been explored in movies before, have you seen life imitate the arts? Here are some instances of famous celebrities having doppelgangers in the past.

He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the US Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army.

Eddie Murphy

Doesn’t the black and white photograph on the left look a lot like one of Eddie Murphy’s earliest characters on screen? Well, the truth is, no one knows who the ‘other’ Eddie Murphy is. This is one of the weirdest cases of doppelgangers I’ve ever seen. It sends chills down my spine each time I see it.

Jennifer Lawrence

Well, Jennifer Lawrence plays the character Mystique in the rebooted X-Men series. So should one really be surprised she might also be an Egyptian actress, born 50 years earlier? The uncanny resemblance between her and Zubaida Tharwat (who is 74 now) is goosebump-inducing. WOW!

Leonardo DiCaprio

Is the Titanic star with the boy-next-door (and gangster) image actually a gender-bending time traveller named Judy Zipper? This picture was found by a Tumblr user who was thumbing through his grandmother’s old yearbook from the 1960s. Seems the heart does always go on!

Now this one is amazing. Culkin, who rode into our hearts with the Home Alone series of movies, actually bear a huge resemblance to a young Vladimir Putin. Now who would have seen that coming?

Cage has played a number of roles involving history, national treasures and magic. Maybe he takes the role of a sorcerer too seriously and travels between times using fractures in dimensions? Who’s his Tennessean twin brother from the Civil War era? No one knows.

Can elves paint? It would definitely seem so. Orlando Bloom, who played the role of a Sindarin Elf named Legolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, was named Nicolae Grigorescu in an earlier avatar. He is considered by many as the father of modern Romanian painting. Talk about being a multi-faceted personality.

Peter Dinklage, who plays the role of Tyrion Lannister in the Game of Thrones series, was actually a jester named Sebastian de Morra, a dwarf at the court of Philip IV of Spain. He has been immortalised in the painting “Portrait of Sebastian de Morra” by Diego Velazquez.

Sylvester Stallone

A Raphael masterpiece, in Vatican City, shows Sylvester Stallone in a painting. The Stallone in the fresco is a follower of Pope Gregory IX, who looks on as the Pope approves the Vatical Decretals. The painting was done in 1511. Rocky, what have you been up to in your spare time?
