Coming to a screen near you on June 4...
It’s another weekend and there’re NINE movies releasing at a screen near you. There’re some good picks and there’s something for everyone in here.
If comedy is your forte, then Spy is the film for you. If you dig horror, then Insidious Chapter 3 is going to make your skin crawl. If history appeals to you, watch Woman in Gold. For those from the sub continent, Dil Dhadak Ne Do and Chandrettan Evideya are for you.

1. Spy

Melissa McCarthy has become an important part of Hollywood movies nowadays. Her timing for comedy is perfect. In Spy, she plays the role of Susan Cooper, an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst who stars behind some of the agency’s most daring missions. When her partner goes missing and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go undercover and infiltrate the lair of a deadly arms dealer. Hilarity ensues.
2. Insidious Chapter 3
Genre: Horror
Director: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott
Franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell writes and directs the prequel to the series. The movie happens before the haunting of the Lambert family. Gifted psychic Elise Rainier is pushed into using her ability to talk to the dead to help a teenage girl targeted by a supernatural force.
3. Survivor
Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Action/Adventure
Director: James McTeigue
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan
It’s been a while since we last saw Pierce Brosnan on screen, and that too in an anti-hero role. A Foreign Service Officer, played by Milla Jovovich, is framed for a terrorist bombing and she is on the run from the government. To add intrigue, a ruthless assassin (Brosnan) is behind her. She should survive at all costs to stop the real crooks’ master plan.
4. Woman in Gold
Genre: Drama
Director: Simon Curtis
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Helen Mirren
Based on a true story, the movie is about the remarkable journey of a Jewish woman who sets out to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for her family’s death at the hands of the Nazis. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, she goes back to retrieve family possessions. Her inexperienced young lawyer Randy Schoenberg is with her and together, they take on the huge odds against them.
5. Entourage
Genre: Comedy
Director: Doug Ellin
Cast: Jeremy Piven, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon
Entourage, an award-winning HBO series, is being adapted to the screen for the first time. The show’s original cast is on the big screen as well. The main players go to make a movie with the help of super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold. Their journey through the cutthroat world of Hollywood is shown in the movie.
6. Burying the Ex
Genre: Horror/Romance/Comedy
Director: Joe Dante
Cast: Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene
Max is going steady with his girlfriend Evelyn. But once she moves in, he understands she is a control-freak. Max wants to call it quits, but he’s afraid of breaking up. When Evelyn is killed in a freak accident, he moves on. Just when he is going steady with another girl, Olivia, Evelyn returns from the grave. And she wants her boyfriend back.
7. Cut Bank
Genre: Mystery/Suspense
Director: Matt Shakman
Cast: Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton
Dwayne McLaren desperately seeks to escape from life in his small town of Cut Bank, Montana, along with his girlfriend Cassandra. They witness a crime and he sees it as an opportunity to get rich quickly. But there are no shortcuts in life and he is soon in the middle of a police investigation. Things escalate quickly.
8. Dil Dhadak Ne Do
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra
Zoya Akhtar, who has given some of Bollywood’s best movies in recent times, comes out with a family drama now. Kamal Mehra is a millionaire who faces bankruptcy. To shore up credibility, he and his wife Neelam invite their rich friends on a luxurious Mediterranean cruise. The subtle fights that then escalates and how things change are portrayed in the movie.
9. Chandrettan Evideya?
Genre: Comedy/Drama
Director: Sidharth Bharathan
Cast: Dileep, Anusree
Chandramohan is a government servant and an ardent classical dance follower. His wife Sushama also works in the government sector. She is of a doubting nature and tends to keep track of everything her husband does. His wife is doubtful about his close friendships with beautiful dancers and keeps close tabs on him by making phone calls every now and then. One day, they go on a trip to the temple-town of Thanjavur and their life changes.
Encroft, I usually double check before writing a preview. Cut Bank was released on the film festival circuit in late 2014. It was theatrically released in April 2015. I went by that date.
In fact, a 10th movie called 'Dracula: The Dark Prince' also released in Qatar today. But since it was actually out in October, 2013, I avoided it like the disease
