Slating Qatar

Why do people living in Qatar slate Qatar on this site?

If you don't like Qatar, you can always **** *** home or to Dubai where you think life is wonderful!

Yep... more pubs than shops.lol... I did a leaving tour of them last night as I'm flying a week on Tuesday- (I have the headache to remember the place by:))

It's only about 30 mins from Betws y Coed. It's not sooo bad, really!

I think the twins will thank me too:) And thank You for the reassurance:)

Sleep well- catch you soon

I was born & raised in the area, I used to live in a small village with a high number of country pubs.....you get the picture I'm sure, probably very very very similar to your home??!!

Ruthin anywhere near Betws y Coed?

Raise my hat to you for making the brave step, but as has been pointed out here tonight, you can always go back, bridges don't have to be burnt!

I wish my Mother had moved us to Germany or Australia when we were younger as she was so close to doing...., then again, I wouldn't be here now etc etc.

I feel sure your kids will be so very greatful to be growing up in a multi-cultural society that is so much more tolerant than the blinkered one in the UK!!

When did you move over & how old your kids?

May all your dreams be pleasant ones.

May the new dawn bring joy, happiness and tolerance

May we all learn to get along

May we all crticized each other and moan and whinge to make the world a better place

May the Canadians win a Gold medal so QS and I see eye to eye

Boinnnnnnnnnnnnnng!

Torque- I'm from a teeny tiny Welsh town in N Wales called Ruthin. Problem is that the attitudes here tend to be teeny tiny too.. A few people actually commented that they thought I'd lost the plot when I decided to ditch my comfortable job in same town and 'drag' my young twins 'half way across the world'. Lol. Poor kids, huh? Demented mother that I am;))

You?

By Torque• 10 Aug 2008 23:44
Torque

differing opinions! Life would be so boring, we'd have nothing to talk about & torque likes to talk, just as you do!!!!

Well, we listen as well & comment where appropriate. ;-)

Driving yeah, well my style changed in Dubai & once again here. Dubai driving is terrible, but not a patch on Doha, Al Khor, Ras Laffan etc....

When people don't criticise constructively it is actually a bad sign...it means they dont care...

I think people get mighty frustrated and criticised when they:

a) see a potential not being realised

b) get caught up in useless bureacracy

c) waste time and money due to the inefficiency/incompetence of others

By nadt• 10 Aug 2008 23:39
nadt

lol Torque, oh your list on driving here will get longer..(oops i better be careful about what i moan about).

Seriously constructive criticism is healthy, as it leads to change, and without change where would we be.

As for flaming the issues, it just shows peoples inabiltiy to see other peoples view, which you many not agree with but have to respect..

By Torque• 10 Aug 2008 23:29
Torque

necessarily the same bed fellows qatarisun, but I don't think you were aiming that at me anyway, but it's a point worth noting.

You have a good attitude & clearly like to help people, that is a fantastic trait & you're not afraid to stand up for your principles & I respect that.

nadt - getting things off our chests is what we should do, when I have a moan about Doha/Qatar I'm sure I can air it on here without getting flamed! So I'll leave for now the total inability of drivers here to negotiate rounabouts....

FranElizabeth - thanks for your comments. Where is 'back here' for you then?

You're missing my point..

I am happy to go out and help the labourers and other who are being abused. In fact I write regularly to newspapers and even our own government complaining and raising issues.

What irritates me is when people moan about incidental things. They are th ones who haven't seen the world and don't realise how fortunate they are .

By qatarisun• 10 Aug 2008 23:22
qatarisun

you wrong again... those who make progress going on and on are NOT unhappy people.. i would say rather other way round... it depends on what do you call happiness.. to be happy sitting in your own tiny circle and enjoy having your monthly salary and couple of drinks at the end of the week.. or to be happy knowing that you help to improve something not only for yourself, but for all humanity...and to enjoy being helpful...

as i said, it's attitude issue, and usually narrow minded people are completely satisfied...it's known...

By nadt• 10 Aug 2008 23:22
nadt

I agree totally with QS, if you dont point out issues, there will never be change.

its similar to how we complain and talk about our partners or kids, it doesnt mean we dont love them or we should leave them, it just an avenue to discuss issues that bug you, deal with it and move on, even if the issues arent resolved..

Besides its healthy to get things off your chest and know that others have similar issues...Can you imagine if no one complained here, there would be no QL...

By FranElizabeth• 10 Aug 2008 23:19
FranElizabeth

I've just been having the same sort of comments from people back here about getting off their backsides. I agree wholeheartedly about making the most of your life. Noone's going to live it for you!

Britexpat- I think it's human nature to pick at little things isn't it? I think I just realised that rather than sitting down whinging about stuff, it was better just to do something about it:)

I guess some people find the idea of change too intimidating.

Glad to know you.. We should enjoy life, ratgher than moaning about petty things.. C'est la vie

By qatarisun• 10 Aug 2008 23:11

ok.. brit..so we call the same things by different names..

you call it moaning, i call it healthy criticism.. and this difference is caused bt difference of our attitudes!

Here you go…

You hear “people moaning”, coz you are convinced that “we” cannot do anything anyway, so why "to complain". I hear “people expose the issues”, as I am sure, "we" can contribute our lepta into improvement of any place where we live…

So this is an attitude issue…

Its not a question of hopelessness..

I've worked as an expat in a few countries..One thing I found in all countries is that Expats always whinge and moan about things. They are never happy with their lot.

By qatarisun• 10 Aug 2008 22:51
qatarisun

brit.. your reflection is quite narrow, sorry… it doesn’t mean WE can and WE will do it…but … our voice is noticed, this way or another..don’t say no… I remember some time ago we had exactly the same conversation here on QL.. and we discussed traffic and driving horror in qatar in particular, and we all agreed something must be done about it…and someone said the same thing: WHAT WE CAN DO?? Who will listen to us??..and few days later this new traffic law was implemented! I don’t say, it’s because we discussed it here on QL, it would be silly to say.. but..who knows… may be our tiny voice has been taken into consideration as well and had some liiiitle effect!

That’s why Qatar needs expats in the first place: to learn things, to implement advanced systems, new rules, to develop a higher life style…Qatar is developing, and development is impossible without exposing the issues.. Qatar is improving, it’s obviously! In order to imrove, you need to know WHAT to improve first!

So don’t be so hopeless.. it’s not a good attitude…

if i was the amir, i'd tell everyone to stop what they're working on and fix up the f**king roads.

By britexpat• 10 Aug 2008 22:33
britexpat

Sorry, but got to agree with SiestaNurse..

In your own countries you can change things. Here in Qatar, where we come on contract for a fixed wage, knowing what we are letting ourselves in for before we arrive, then we shouldn't moan or gripe once we get here...

Don't like it ? Terminate contract and go home! What could be simpler ??

By Torque• 10 Aug 2008 22:31
Torque

, very well said.

My comments weren't aimed at anyone criticising Qatar, but those back in the UK who were just so negative.

Torque

By qatarisun• 10 Aug 2008 22:30

We don’t complain about Qatar in general.. we just highlight certain issues.. what’s wrong with that? There is always a room for improvement…Healthy criticism shows which areas could be and should be improved…We HAVE to criticize, otherwise how humanity would progress?? If everyone is perfectly happy with everything, who will develop, implement, build, repair, organize, etc., etc.??

It’s good idea to criticize ourselves as well.. this is a right start for ourselves' improvement as well…

So it really sounds stupid, hopeless and helpless, when they say "take it or leave it"..motto of looser (in most of the cases, with little exception).. no.. there is a third way: CHANGE it or IMPROVE it!!

By Torque• 10 Aug 2008 22:25
Torque

...when I was back in my old watering hole earlier this year, practically every mate & acquaintence said that the UK was finished & that they wished they'd had the balls to leave as I'd done after spending all of my adult life there!(not all in the pub, but a fair bit..lol)

I said it wasn't down to balls, more about realising that you have one life & if you don't live it for you, then no-one else is going to on your behalf!

I told them if they didn't like the UK anymore they should leave, only one has done so since....

Moaning is natural, but also cheap.

Live by your actions, not just your words...

I hate the way that as soon as your point out a problem or criticise a country people immediately say 'Well go home then'. Since when has complaining been such an issue? Plus there would be no-one left in Qatar if we all followed that advice!

By britexpat• 10 Aug 2008 22:01

What are you doing here then. Take yourself off to Spain senora and sing Uno Plaoma Blanca till you get fed up of the sun, sea, sand, surf, sangria, sombreros, salsa and the spanish waiters..

I agree! If you don't like it bugger off back where you camr from! People forget why they came here in the first place!

Try and see the bigger picture. It's not specific to Qatar. People will slag off whatever place they're living in, anywhere in the world. It's just that you visit a website about Qatar everyday and read all about it. Go and sit in a pub in the UK and listen to everyone moaning about living there.
