Battling the Qatar bulge

Battling the Qatar bulge

You hear often that after people move to Qatar, they gain tons of weight.  Of course, not all people - but many.

In Canada, the same thing happens to students who go away for university.  They eat junk, become time constrained, and find themselves snacking more than they should.

In Qatar however, the cause of weight gain is a bit different.  We have several months where people are stuck indoors.  If you used to go out and run and jog, that all comes to halt .  The heat makes you crazy lazy and eating out is one of the biggest past-times here.

Many people pack on tons of weight shortly after moving here, the  brunches, lunches, coffee meet-ups (read desserts) and such will all add-up.

So how do you counter all of this?

There are tons of ways to lose weight, and obviously diet and exercise are the most common-sense routes to go.  Yet, there are a couple of things you can do in Qatar that help you out.

First, avoid eating out for a bit.  Even eating a regular chicken and potato meal can become packed with calories with added butter and oils you often get when you dine out.

This next one is going to be difficult -  but pass on the desserts.  This takes a massive amount of self-discipline, but say no to the sugary offerings.

Tell some friends you are watching your waistline, often they will rally around and support you and pick places to eat out that are diet friendly.

On the flipside, keep some distance to from your friends who zero self-control and are always encouraging you to binge with them.  You need to break a habit, and likely an addiction to sugar, and it's not easy.  Make sure the people you surround yourself with help you to achieve your goals.

It's currently Ramadan, thus gastronomical delights are on offer everywhere.  Friends are hosting dinners, hotels are doing opulent tents, and restaurants are offering value packed iftar menus.   This can be a dieter's nightmare!  Try to stick to healthy options, always load up on the salad and veggies, and go moderate on the dessert (or skip it completely if you can).

Being healthy, energetic, and feeling great about yourself will be worth it.

Find some workout buddies, hit a gym, join fitness classes or some sort of sport.  Always keep moving, in turn you'll find this will often motivate a healthy diet.

Only jobless obese person can write such a big response. Ya control your diet otherwise heart failures are common in obese people.

Btw I don't need permission from a non-entity as to how i should write.

Mufti: Yeah expected response, go off on a tangent and avoid the crux... But ok, lets stick to the tangent now; the poor and downtrodden ( who 'irritate' me) need a rich diet... But despite your best efforts mr. Robin hood, they don't get it, not even in Qatar... The diet the OP mentioned is a mirage for the people you mention... They eat a packet of bread with curd... So, your comment has no relevance to any of what the OP is saying... There's plenty of fat sick unhealthy people here for whom this advice is great... And you go on about rich and poor and sun and shade...try to get the point.. Don't put down others and their posts just because...and of course you don't care about others' opinion of your post; because surprise surprise, no one does... Opinions are like a***holes; everyone's got one... Nothing personal...tc...

This advice is for 10-15% of residents. Rest of the people work under sun and they need this kind of diet.

It's hard work. I've gained almost 7kg in 6 months.

Every meeting you go to is full of food choices, very hard to resist. Too lazy to exercise because of the heat. I need help

And finally it is advisable to have more encounters with your spouse. She will also make you lose a lot of energy.

Alternatively you can also use your brain. It burns more calories than any other organ if used extensively!
