Take a look at the above link..

Bilirubin comes from red blood cells. When red blood cells get old, they are destroyed. Hemoglobin, the iron-containing chemical in red blood cells that carries oxygen, is released from the destroyed red blood cells after the iron it contains is removed. The chemical that remains in the blood after the iron is removed becomes bilirubin.

First find out the cause of your jaundice, i.e; whether it is due to infectious cause or due to others like obstructive jaundice or blood disorders. Most common is viral hepatitis which can be of various types like A,B,C,D, E. Type A and E are spread through feco-oral route via contaminated food and water which B and C via blood and blood related products.

D only exists with B and not alone. All of these may cause the symptom of jaundice. So to answer any of your question, first you need to get diagnosed properly.

And only if you have Hep. B, I think you may be reported to authorities as it is screened during our medical for visa.

Take care. Consult a goos doctor and do as advised.

To answer your question, JAUNDICE is not contagious coz it's not a disease. It's a symptomatic sign that something is wrong with your body:

1. You may have weak blood cells, you need vitamin supplements (B complex, Iron, etc)supplements

2. You may have some liver problems: do you take any mecidine? do you drink alcoholic beverages?

3. does your family has history of jaundice?

You need to know what is the cause of the jaundice. If it is Hepatitis, it is transmissible.

But there are a number of causes of Jaundice some are not contagious you may visit a doctor to have more test done in order to rule out the cause of the bilirubin in your blood.

your yellowish discoloration may have several causes the most common of which is viral hepatitis where there are several subclasses. Hep A is the most common transmitted through the oral-feacal route meaning you get the virus from the contaminated food and water that you take and excrete it through your feces. It is self limiting usually lasting for 2 weeks at the most. Since you get it from food or water, best thing is isolation and use of separate utensils until full recovery.

Jaundice is a symptom, not a disease. You need to find out the cause of the jaundice. There are many possible causes. Some are not contagious but others, such as hepatitis, are very contagious.

Jaundice is curable in 2-3 weeks treatment and I dont think it will be a problem here. They will not kick you out but you should take care of yourself and it is normally spreading through water. You would have got it from somewhere else through contaminated drinking water when you were on holidays. Dont let others use your plates or glasses without washing it properly with washing liquid and hot water and even the toilet should be cleaned after you use it. You should be very careful in your food as well (salt, oil etc. should be avoided).
