4th Action on Diabetes Screening Village opens at Katara
Running from 12 – 14 November 2015, the 4th Annual Action on Diabetes Screening Village at Katara will open to mark World Diabetes Day, with visitors able to learn about healthy diets and exercise from diabetes educators, in addition to being tested in the custom-built Action on Diabetes screening bus.
The Screening Village is another example of ongoing efforts to educate members of the community and those at risk on the risk factors that lead to Diabetes and empower them to avoid and manage it through early detection as well as equip them with simple steps, tools and know-how to safeguard their health.
Separately, the 4th Annual Maersk Oil Qatar Petroleum Challenge is being held on November 14 and 15 at Sealine Resort and will feature 150 competitors from over 20 corporations and ministries in a bid to raise money through registration fees for the Al Bawasil childrens’ camp for those with Diabetes.
Dr. Mohsin Mismar, Head of Service Development at the Primary Health Care Corporation, said: “Action on Diabetes (AOD) plays a valuable role in our collective fight against Diabetes in Qatar. We are delighted to once again support the AOD Screening Village at Katara through the provision of health staff and diabetes educators. We hope to see hundreds of people tested over the three days and raised awareness about the causes of diabetes and how to prevent it developing.”
Over the past four years, Action on Diabetes has screened more than 32,000 people for the condition with the help of partners; engaged with thousands of people through awareness campaigns and offered more than 2000 training opportunities through seven different courses to further educate doctors, nurses and diabetes educators about the latest techniques in treatment and support.
Herluf Nis Thomsen, Action on Diabetes Program Manager, said: “Without our strategic partners, Action on Diabetes would not have been nearly as successful as it has been over the past year. Through the continued financial commitment of Maersk Oil Qatar, and the provision of talented health staff and diabetes educators by our other strategic partners, we are all helping to fight one of this country’s biggest health battles. I look forward to once again seeing crowds of people at the Diabetes Village at Katara this weekend.”
Action on Diabetes - initiated and funded by Maersk Oil Qatar - is a public-private partnership with the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Healthcare Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association and the world leader in Diabetes care Novo Nordisk.
Lewis Affleck, Managing Director, from Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “As a global conglomerate, Maersk is ambitious and committed to Qatar for generations to come. Maersk Oil is focused on supporting social investment programmes that make a meaningful difference to the lives of people living in Qatar. There is no better example of this than Action on Diabetes, which seeks to address one of Qatar’s greatest health challenges. Maersk Oil Qatar is proud to have helped initiate this important public-private partnership, and we are equally delighted to support the Katara screening village and the Maersk Oil Qatar Petroleum Challenge which are both timed to coincide with World Diabetes Day this coming weekend.”
The Action on Diabetes screening bus is fitted with a range of testing equipment to allow analysis of random blood glucose and body mass index. People tested at the bus receive a personalised analysis of results, as well as recommendations on how to reduce the risk of developing diabetes in the future.
