Qatar running out of Sand?

Saw this on Marjorie's blog and couldn't resist resposting it:

"Qatar is facing a crippling shortage of sand.

This has actually happened before; the country doesn't have sufficient facilities for processing sand for use in construction. But it's still a pretty funny thought: the last thing Qatar needs more of is SAND!"

Now back to work....

sand is there but they are shiffiting to another place in the industrial area, and that is the reason for the shortage these days

I'm in the transport biz. Theres shortage of Washed/treated sand used in construction as there are only two sand treatment plants.

The rate at which truckloads of sand is being transported from Mesaied dunes to fill the construction sites, soon there maybe a shortage of Dune sand(desert sand) which is also known as plaster sand.

the law restricts from taking sand from certain areas.. or rather sand can only be taken from designated areas only... so thats where the prob is.. not shortage.. but shortage in the areas where they can take it from..

Yup, this sand shortage is becoming a right pain in the backside. I currently need about 30000 cubic metres of concrete per month, usually more, for the project I'm on up in Ras Laffan. That's a fair bit of sand, and the concrete plant on site really struggles to keep up a supply of sand.

Incidentally, transport from the sand plant is also a problem - due to various load limits that have been imposed on the roads, each truck can only carry about half a load.

brandylady is right.. the sand from the desert cannot be used directly for construction; yes for filling excavations it can be used but not for civil construction with cement. For this, it needs to be purified, presently only two major plants exisit to do this and they are unable to meet the demand.

Yes I am lacking Intelegence but we are making a sand washing facility in UMM BARB. That's how I know about these things. I am in the construction for the last 25 year and have very little experience.

Bakamuna - I get paid for my lack of inteligence :)

we talk, it's called communicating and sometimes we talk about his work, not difficult if you have an ounce of intelligence which judging by your behaviour today, you are sadly lacking

you cannot use desert sand or even sea sand like that it has to go through a process and finally you have the sand which can be used....deep didnt you go for lkg :)

How come you possibly know everything what your husband knows? Impossible.

I know what my hubby knows and as he has been in construction for all of his life I think he may know what he is talking about, I am not sure what your problem is with me but you are starting to get on my nerves, if all you want to do is pick fault with everything I post then I suggest you stop reading them.

I know desert sand is used but only after it has been through a purification process

has to have all the impurities taken out of it before it can be used, desert sand is no good for building

good to hear that. Atleast one more avenue for a lot of reasons.

1. more trading & contracting co. to import sand :)

2. More companies means more employment

3. More employment means more people & more people also means more remittance.
