salted chips or not, balut most likely cannot and should not be enjoyed if you are not accustomed to it before hand, that is you have been force fed balut as a child.

It has a very distinct taste and smell, and the idea of eating a nearly-developed embryo is not the best of descriptions or ideas.

Brit... If you're a vegan then no comment but if not, you're no better than the rest of us. It's not like you need to know how a burger was made to enjoy it.

It's delicious but I really want to try exotic foods. Balut is like a normal delicacy back home but snake or blowfish now that's another story.

look at your reactions people, every part of this planet have their own kind of exotic delicacies.. anyway, this balut is healthy, just don't look while eating it. lolz.

hawk10, this is not a chicken. It's a duck's egg and it's not like what you're saying it will come out in next 2 days. It's a nearly-developed embryo, a 2 weeks old egg.

You have to eat the thing in the dark so that you barely see the feathers, the beak, feet everything. That's how you eat it. And dont forget the salt and vinegar.

ok i just googled it.. and the images are... OMG! i feel sorry for the little chicks.... far out! i never knew such a thing happened.... that is something i CANNOT wrap my head around! *insert grossed out face here*

As you can see in the video, they have to drink that black colour liquid also, which is accompanying the baby chicken.

Yuck.....its like eating a live chicken. Other nationalities than filipino may dont know what is Balut? Its almost live chicken in the egg which is due to come out in next 1-2 days. They enjoy eating it. My friend brought it from Philipines and I have seen it but that day I was not able to eat my lunch.
