GT- shocking headline

hari_krishnanv
By hari_krishnanv

Having grown up reading some of the best written newspapers in English out of India ( we do read and write english there!), I was never a big fan of GT. But the basic error on the first page of GT this morning was a real shocker. The headline said

" MAN SENTENCED TO HANG FOR BEATING DEATH"

Well, the guy didnt "beat death". He beat someone to death!

flawed thinking......the last time i checked, outsourcing companies in Bangalore were teaching their employees how to sing "you will never walk alone".

of the headline in the Kuwait Times in 1978.

P.I.S.S. Officials Get Pay Increase.

They meant the "Pensions Insurance and Social Security" officials!

CRACKER,Ksarat!

Btw, Jesus, get a job tongues can change real quick, mate. Suggest you start taking Chinese and Indian language classes. 'cause those will soon be "get a job tongues" and "please your boss tongues"!!!!

PS: Appologies to the rest of the crowd here. That was meant for Jesus's eyes only and I really didnt meant it ! Indian and Chinese businesses might rule but English will and should remain the #1 language.

Reading GT is one of favourie fun activity...it makes me laugh..their grammar and the typo's in particular...as someone mentione above, the english in Indian news papers are far superior..particularly, "The Hindu" is the best I have ever read in any part of the world

This is an Ad I read in GT some time back...

Indeed...with such a name, and hey I would refrain from calling you all sorts of names bcos of the nickname that you carry, clever bugger eyy...LOL!!!

Well as much as I can see, it doesnt curtail to a particular writer of a country, this is what is meant by absence of Proof Readers...

I think the English language like many other languages changes progressively over the years as far as words are concerned but the basic grammar does not.

What I would like to mention that the art of readin and writing good books has changed overtime too. The American English is not English English and I too find myself confronted with an American spelling and grammar programme that I don't agree with but at then end of the day having lived in so many foreign countries with so many different types of English you get used to it and learn not to be so critical in the end.

they should have said " Man sentenced to hang for beating to death". Good communication is all about using the simplest way to convey the message.

By anonymous• 29 May 2008 09:39

However, not in the connection with that article I woud say it is gramatically incorrect.

Well let me tell you guys, this morning I bought the paper and was driving...and then suddenly I read that headline...it sure did catch my attention, and I just so couldnt resist the temptation that I actually started reading what it meant while driving..LOL!!!

Stupid GT..this is Customer Cheating I say!!!

By hari_krishnanv• 29 May 2008 09:36

why quality of so many services in Qatar is so bad- newspapers, customer service at stores, banks, schools etc etc. I would say, its because of lack of serious competition! Btw, does the country have some sort of a consumer grievance redressal system? Consumer courts?

By bakamuna• 29 May 2008 09:33

i was stunned how this guy cheated death lolzzz

This actually means that the peson cheaed on death means he remained alive so in this case beating death.

The English in the newspapers is often incorrect but who are we to criticise I am glad we get one in English anyway.

By anonymous• 29 May 2008 09:26

although ambiguous I think it makes sense. It was a death from beating. i.e. a beating death.

I bet the man wishes it was true now though, beating death from hanging!!!
