Young children & Autistic Spectrum Disorder
We are thinking of moving to Doha next year. I'm due my second baby in March. My first son is 3 and is currently being assessed for Autism, with which he has a speech delay. 2 questions...
1. What are the baby shops and childrens facilities like is Doha? I presume you can get most things there.
2. Are there, and can you recommend a health facility that would be suitable for my son to continue his speech therapy and ASD assessments?
Many thanks!

Did you find a Speech Therapist?
I have been traveling through Asia, and the Middle East as an SLP, and would consider going there to practice if I had at least 5 to 7 patients there. Trained in US, and practiced also in Canada. I think I would need a sponsor to stay there as well.
Have been working in the Philippines recently. Fully USA certified and registered. English only. MA-CCC_SLP

Acupuncture is not a treatment for Autism
AUTISM CURE ,Autistic CURE , Retarded Kids cure with THE TOLE in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
All the cured stories of autism are fabricated.
A True story of Autism Cure – Information for the parents of autistic children.
The following are the experience of a father who took his son too many places and different types of treatment to save him from Autism.
I am a father of a 8 years old autistic boy. Like all parents, we thought acupuncture might be a treatment for my son. Since 2-3 years we were thinking to go to China and do the real Chinese treatment to save my son. One day while browsing in the midnight, my wife found that only and one guy offering an acupuncture treatment for Autism in the world. The name was “MASTER LEONG” and by all his beautiful write ups in the site we have gone to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with great expectation. But dear friends beware about such frauds. Acupuncture may heal many disease but not for Autism. As an autistic boy’s father I can understand the feelings of such parents but be realizing that there are people in the world knowing how to exploit us.
As soon as we reached their in KL, he found that my son having severe Autism (without any diagnose) and advised to do therapy 3 times daily. (That cost 70 US$/day) for 1 month with strict diet. As sorrowing parents we agreed all his conditions and applied his brain powder also. In fact we found some changes – especially in hyper activities. After 1 month of treatment we went back to Qatar and continued brain powder for 2 more months (1200 US$ / Month) with strict diet. As other relatives and friends we also thought that we are in the right place and acupuncture may bring my son back to normal. So we gone to Malaysia again and started treatment with great pleasure. But we got a chance to discuss with another parent who has done acupuncture 6 months to 1 year continuously and realized that the changes comes from diet only. That means we can control the hyper activities of an autistic child with diet. But prolongation of diet will be dangerous for the child. As we stopped the diet the child became worst as before. And what happened to the all that money and time we spent for acupuncture?
Now if any of you interested to see the immediate changes in your autistic child, you may try the following diet:
Don’t give: CHEESE, CHOCOLATE, CANDY, JUNK FOOD, ICE COLD DRINKS, ICE CREAM, SOFT DRINKS, MANGO, DURIAN, LYCHEE, MANGOSTEEN, LONGAN, RAMBUTAN AND GRAPE.
Reduce: MILK, BANAN
Fruit can be taken : Apple, Orange, Pear, Papaya.
Remember, diet can make some changes but not Acupuncture. After reading master’s advertisement -“Some families even have 2 autistic kids in one family. We cure them together so not to worry any more we are here for you ALL” Don’t forget to ask him the addresses of cured autistic children other than Malaysians.
For further information pl. contact me, it is my pleasure to share the experience with similar parents.
THE TOLE'S WAY OF Autism TREATMENT cannot Cure AUTISM. There are many researches on Autism but none of them has much result including acupuncture. THE TOLE'S Brain Powder hasn’t shown any good result for AUTISM.
See the FAQ's about acupuncture.
Q: Is Autism can be treated by acupuncture?
A: No.
Q: Acupuncture can make any changes in Autistic child?
A: No.
Q: How can we reduce the hyper activity of an Autistic child?
A: By the above diet we can see the noticeable changes in our children within a short time.
Q: Diet can make any health problems?
A: Yes. Prolongation in diet not advisable to any child.
Whoever wishes to know about my experience please contact.

Hello,
I just happened to see your post and was wondering if you were in attendance at the December 4th training on ABA therapy we presented at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Doha. We are bringing a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) back to Doha in the next month to provide in-home assessments for families, along with training, then ongoing BCBA consultation to keep your child's program moving forward. If you are interested in chatting about ABA in Doha, or our services, I would be happy to skype. My email address is [email protected].
The venue has been changed to Al Ahli Hospital. Please contact us at [email protected] to RSVP. Please include your mobile so we can contact you in the event of any last-minute changes.
I already RSVP with Doha mums and i will definitly be there... Thanks a lot
oops - forgot to mention that the venue has been confirmed. It will be held at the Compass Int'l School's Gharaffa branch.
You can find a map here:
http://www.cisdoha.org/media/!Doha/Public%20Documents/school%20map.pdf
Don't forget to RSVP, please!
International Diagnostic Solutions and Out of Sync (via Doha Mums) would like to invite parents to a short workshop provided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst on the basics of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
This is a wonderful introduction to treatment options for parents who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The course will provide an overview for parents on the basics of applied behavior analysis. We will cover what it is and when to utilize behavior analysis as a course of treatment.
We will also discuss the reasons behind many of the challenging behaviors that parents face, and provide suggestions for methods to minimize those behaviors. Additionally, in this workshop we will provide some practical tips and tools for those everyday problems. This is a wonderful introduction to treatment options for parents who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Parents, teachers, therapists and other service providers are all welcome to attend.
The workshop will be held on Saturday 4th December from 1-3pm. (Location TBA - but will probably be either in the Madinat Khalifa or Gharaffa area). There is no charge for the workshop.
To RSVP please send an email to [email protected]
Feel free to invite others who may be interested - but please ask them to RSVP directly to us so we can notify them of any changes that need to be made.
Please include your mobile number in your response so we can contact you with any last minute changes.

hi there,
My name is Ameera and i am a Speech Language Pathologist. I would like to help you. But I would like to inform you that I will be here only till november 1st week. Please feel free to contact me if you require my services..
My contact no is: 44795011
Personally, I would rather see committed resources right here in Doha - a clinic that specializes in Speech & Language disorders, a clinic that specializes in Autism Spectrum Disorders, an Occupational Therapy clinic, a Physical Therapy Clinic, etc.
However, if we need to start with expensive overseas-based services then at least it's a start. . .we'll get there. I'm finding that we actually DO have quite a fair number of service providers here in Doha, most of whom are working under the table. One of the goals of the Out of Sync Network is to bring all of those resources together so we can all find them ;)
We'll get there. . .if Dubai and Abu Dhabi can each have multiple clinics then so can we!
on the whole exercise
I have no objection, poeople do get money they spend
especialy some resurcs coming from abroad
no, my intentin was not that
what I mean, whether we get the BENEFIT proportional to the EXPENSES ??
that is the question... Otherwise all parents may be feeling they donate for charity
kind rgards, same time all support to the event, whatever way i can
Hi all -
As scarce as quality resources are for autism and other special needs I feel it's important to examine all angles. Some families just need the support of other families while others are looking for local resources that they can afford. Still others are happy to spend a lot of money on getting the care that they want. There's room for all of it, and I personally don't feel that we should fault the organizations that do make a profit from it.
All that said, we'll be focusing on bringing parents together for support & discussions and on bringing the resources to us - whether it be for a one-time seminar or a sensory therapy "playgroup".
The organization of the group is coming along slowly but surely. . .and our new name for the network is "Out of Sync", which is much more palatable than "special needs" :)
You can sign up for our mailing list at [email protected] For now you'll receive an automated message, but as things come together we'll send out announcements of meetups etc.
We should do a self- introspection what the parents gained from the workshops and symposiums organized by the so-called Therapists and Experts. I have personally attended some of them, which are mandatory to be organized in a “5-star hotels”, to suit their pompous thinking, not the agony of the parents.
Here I look forward the Support group to be organized by Expat Sueño. We hope this is not going to be another farce. Expat Sueño may take interest to see that CHARITY is the buzzword for such Group, not the COMMERCIAL ANGLES.
Wish all success for the Group by Expat Sueño
Will contact her separately
HMC at their Rumeila Hospital has a special needs and speach therapy wing.
most of the vulnerable & ignorant parents are literally cheated by those visiting professors / specialists in Doha.
There were symposiums / workshps in MOVENPICK hotel , by somone who claimed to be "Specialists or Therapists".
At the end of the Day,what parents got ?
Did anyone check about it ?
a BIG ZERO !!!
Here I look with hope the above message from Expat Sueño.
A support group of parents, who knows what they pay for.
Such groups should be organised with CHARITY in mind, not COMMERCIAL ANGLES.
with all the best wishes.
I will contact Expat Sueño - separately
Doha International Centre For Special Needs @ Bu Hammor Petrol Station. Autism, Downs Syndrome & Other Disabilities. OT, PT, Behaviour Therapy & Speech Therapy.
On a similar note, Doha Mums is reaching out to the community of parents who have kids with special needs - dyslexia, Downs Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, oral dyspraxia and whatever else - with a new support group, called Out of Sync.
We're just getting started, but we're looking for both the parents of these kids and professionals who serve them. We will have informal get-togethers where parents can offer support and exchange info on those hard-to-find resources; we'll also invite speakers on topics such as speech & language delays, early signs of autism and how to advocate for your child.
To sign up for our distribution list please send an email to [email protected]
Hello....I'm hoping to arrange a coffee meet up, or something similar when I am in Doha this coming week with my colleague, Dr. Fleitas (a psychologist). My name is Tracey, and I'm currently in DC. I'm an occupational therapist, and will be traveling to Kathmandu for a conference for international schools. Dr. Fleitas and I have heard about the difficulties many families abroad are having finding assessment and treatment services for their children. After a LOT of planning, we've put together a way for families to have access to the resources they may have had back in their home towns. We are starting our Autism program in Doha, and would love to hear from families what they need. We are providing regular access to Board Certified Behavior Analysts, assessments done in your homes, training for parents, nannies, extended family, and ABA therapists to provide ongoing services to kids in need.
If you are interested in meeting, please send an email to: [email protected]. We are going to try to set up a few convenient times. We look forward to hearing from you, and hope we can help!

We are an Aussie family and have been in Doha for 12 months now. We recently returned to Australia to have our son 7 assessed for schooling and disablities after nurmerous attempts at enrolling him here and homeschooling him full time since arriving.
After two months of assessments he has been diagnosed with very mild autism spectum, undermethylation and pyrrolia. We are looking into the learning centre but are also searching for social outlets so he is mixing with other children.
Does anybody have any information regarding the learning centre and his chances of acceptance?
Also is there any groups of which not only he will fit into but will also give myself a chance to meet people in a similar situation here in doha? It is not only important for him to socialize but myself, I am not sure about groups such as the home school group and what they entail.
Any advice or assistance is really appreciated.
Hello!
Email me at [email protected]. I can put you in touch with a speech therapist for you son in Doha.
Best,
Aneela
Hi deedee: I would love to get connected with the homeschool groups, if you know if any. I've been doing my son's home ABA program since he was 3 (he's now 8) and have seen great results. I still would like him to have some social time in school.
You're right about ASD: just heard back. No provision for special needs.
What about the Doha Montessori and British school? Are you a special needs mom? I'd love to chat off of the forum, if possible. My email is: [email protected].
I am checking out the Learning Center through QF.
Thanks again,
here. Check out www.dohahomeeducators.com
The Learning Center is for grades 1-12 where children are of average or above average intelligence with learning difficulties. I suppose autism doesn't apply there, but check it out anyways.
www.tlc.edu.qa
Sunbeam Kindergarten info can be found at
sunbeamsqatar.com I've heard good and bad about it.
The shafallah Center is a brand new, state of the art, purpose built facility catering to serious special needs children.
Unfortunately what I have heard is that only Qatari or selected Arab children are allowed in.
Good luck with your search. There are not enough schools here for the population, so they can be very picky on who they let in. They have never needed to offer special services to get full enrollment and so it ends up being a neglected segment of Doha society.
deedee: thanks for the info. I am also serious considering homeschooling...any thoughts on other families out there who do that? I would consider "school" as more of an opportunity for social interaction. Do you have any suggestions for schools with inclusion and 1-1 aid?
You need to seriously reconsider this move. ASD does not take special needs kids. Services for autism/special needs children are in their infancy over here. Your options are severely limited at the best. Check out The Learning Center at Qatar Academy and Sunbeam. They should both be posted over to the right under the Qatar schools database.
We're moving from the US and looking for schools that will take kids on the autism spectrum. Does anyone know if the American School in Doha take special needs kids? Any information with schools and services for special needs would be helpful. Thanks!

Faith & Love ... the key ingredients in LIFE..
There is a new Autism Support Group in Doha and they have monthly meetings- First Wednesday at 3.30pm and Last Wednesday at 9.30am at the Cafe next to Virgin in Villagio every month.

Faith & Love ... the key ingredients in LIFE..
Having worked with many children from across the spectrum and their parents, the most able parents became experts on it. 'Justmoi',1 in 10 children are believed to have a learning disorder of some type, so good luck to schools trying to filter them out and still make profit!! Knowledge is power in the case of Autism and I have found international seminars on it enlightening and inspiring when designing programmes to suit children from the spectrum. Make sure any organization or Institutes(I hate that word)you choose to assist you, views your child as 'unique' and not just like the rest. In my experience, I have never met two children exactly alike and with Autism its definitely not a 'one solution for all' type disability. Form a parent support group while your here. That will be your biggest asset. After attending professional devel. on traits of Autism, everyone comes out thinking 'thats me!!'. Most I.T. addicts have traits! (So how long have I been online?)

Faith & Love ... the key ingredients in LIFE..
Justmoi, well said...they talk about the state of the art facilities this and that but outside that establishment, there is no proper support and resources for parents of/kids with special needs.
Could you elaborate what you mean about "heard negative reports about the staff?" (at Sunbeam) My third son goes there and I do want to be aware what is being said and done there. He cant talk so its difficult to get feedback from him. (U can PM me)
Thanks!!
Faith & Love ... the key ingredients in LIFE..
Justmoi, I totally agree with you. Theses schools don't care!!!! It is all about making a quick buck. The fact is they CAN and WILL discriminate here. There is no one to challenge them.
There is a massive problem in The Gulf and not only Qatar, with the provision of support of children with mild/moderate learning difficulties.
Most schools over here reject these children. In fact a couple of the 'main players' have been known to kick kids out if they suspect a child may have a problem.
The problem is, the more the population of Qatar grows the more children we see coming in and some have special needs and yet their parents have the door shut in their faces.
Shaffalah Center is for severely disabled children and only Qatari children at that. Sumbeam tries it best but I have heard negative reports about the staff. The Learning Center takes children who are 'higher functioning'.
If a parent is 'lucky enough' to have a child accepted by a school, they have the added financial burden of then paying for a Support Assistant for that child. Some of these assistants are not even qualified in special needs, so it is very hit and miss.
These schools need to wake up and smell the coffee. They would certainly not get away with this in England for example. So what makes them think they have the right to discriminate here?
All children regardless of how they 'function' has a right to an education. For me it says more about the management of schools than it says about these lovely kids.
They say they employ the 'best' teachers. However, if they are so 'good' why can they not cope with children who simply learn in a different way?
Good luck to all you people with children who are special needs. You need support and help not rejection.
Haadian,

Donot put your child in the closet, we need them to be part of our society.

Hi there
There is a great need for speech therapists here - both privately and in the international schools. I know that the school my son is at is desperately looking for a speech therapists.
If you would like further details please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].
Dear All, I am a qualified German Speech and language Pathologist who provides therapy for kids in German, English, Arabic and French. I have more than 15 years of experience working with children who have language and speech delays. I have been working both in private clinics and International schools.
My husband has been thinking of moving to Doha to work there and I was wondering about the possibilities of finding work there as a Speech Therapist. Would it also be a good idea to relocate to Doha with a one year old kid? What are the possibilities for kids in terms of nursery schools and other kids' activities? I would also appreciate some information about the cost of living and cost of housing.
One final question: what kind of International schools available in Doha that could be in need for a speech therapist?
Thanks a lot

Hi !
I am looking for speech and occupational therapy for my kid ( boy, 3years old). I will appreciate if i can be provided some contacts for this
thanks
Anjum
We have a school for this.
Unlike the British / US / Qatari kids, we handle the kids of middle class family who cannot afford to pay 1500$ per month.
Now the question - whether you have to pay 1500$ per month -- or wish to come with legs down to the earth
Regards
iam mother with five sons, three of them are speech delay, i gave them speech therapy at home, now they are boy grade 6,grade 4 and KG, may be i can help you
The bitter truth is that you are unlikely to find a school in Doha which will take on a child with ADHD and learning difficulties. It's probably all to do with economics - children with special needs require extra staff. Who is going to pay their wages?
Hello, could you please send me the contact for the Speech and Language Therapist? We are considering a move to Doha and would liek to ask her a few questions. Much appreciated! Thanks.
I was considering the learning centre as a option for my child. but after reading ur comments , i feel I am back to square one. could u pls advice me of some school in doha who can deal with students with ADHD problems and learning difficulties.
i am looking for a school for my child who is detectd with learning disabilities. if anyone finds one pls let me know.
Could you please clarify your comment regarding the Shafallah Center? I visited there last summer and I saw a very cutting edge autism unit. My son is on the autism spectrum so I only visited the facilities associated with the autism unit. It concerns me because I am considering relocating there and trying to get my son into the Shafallah Center.
thanks

It is realy hard to find Occupational therapist here.
Please provide the one reference you have for my son has to undergo OT regularly.
""They walk among us. They vote & they even reproduce""
The choices for support of special needs are limited here, folks. I've lived here for 15 years -- I should know! My preschooler goes to see a Canadian lady who works with him on his speech delay/pronunciation problems once a week. She is licensed, qualified and very good. I pay out of pocket over $80/week for one hour of services for him.
I would NOT recommend either Shafallah or The Learning Center. The former is for severely mentally disabled children (mostly locals) and the latter is a school but, again, populated mostly with locals and it's a watered-down curriculum with few genuinely-trained specialists on staff to deal with the types of things you're thinking of *they're mostly regular teachers who have had a few inservices on working with kids with ADD -- that's about it).
I recently found an Occupational Therapist here, but it was HARD. There is a local group of expat specialists (mostly therapists, psychologists, etc.) that meet, and they do have links/references to other people here for those needing referrals, but families moving here from the States/UK/elsewhere need to know that if your child needs a lot of specialized support, then you're better off staying home.
If anyone wants/needs more info, please email me for specifics.
Cheers --
Dear USAexpat,
Can you plz send me the speech therapist contact number? My son needs a speech therapist.
Thanks
Welcome to Doha and congratulations for ur pregnancy.
I would like to take this opportunity and talk about bare facts regarding Autism care in Doha. My son is 7 years old and is undergoing OT in India. He is diagonsed with HFATS - high functioning autistic traights spectrum. he is joining me by last week October'07.
There are just 4 neurologists in this country. I will write their names tomorrow as I do not have them handy rigth now.
there is one Neurosurgeon in Doha clinic - he is more of a doctor for orthopaedic patients. Second is a lady neuro paedratic. She is in UK for her knee transplant an should be back in Doha in first week Nov'07.
I did meet both of them and their feed back is neuro care is absolutely zero in Doha.
There are two more neurologists in Hamad hospital. Havent met them yet.
Shafallah center is for complete mentally challenged kids. I met the officials there and they would not do any OT training to outside kids. The kid has to study there and that is where our kids are different from the kids there in Shafallah.
There is a lady ortho paedic doctor in Rumailah hospital, she would / could be a guide for our kid's problem.
My son would aso require a speech therapy and would like to know about the speech therapist in Doha...Can you please e-mail me the number of your friends speech therapist
Many Thanks
Can you provide me the info about speech therapist. I have a 5 year old and I am looking for one or any special school for speech.
Hi Cat, I too have a 3 year old son who is speech delayed. I just found out today from my husband that we would most probably be moving to Doha in February. I would like to keep in touch with yourself so that we can compare notes. Cheers.
I have a friend whose child is in speech therapy. E-mail me and I will put you in touch with her. There aren't many options in Doha, I think there is only one.

Hi Cat,
I just wanted to congratulate you on your pregnancy. You will find that there is lots of baby gear shops in Doha including Mothercare, The Baby Shop, Toy's R us, Chicco and others. So yes, you will find here everything you need for your little one. I'm not sure what you mean by "children facilities", if you refer to medical care, I think is really good. Please do a search about child-birth in this website and you will find lots of info.
I'm not familiar with special needs health facilities here in Doha so cannot give you a personal opinion, but the Marhaba magazine talks about to centres, so it might be a good starting point for you to enquiry about speech teraphy and assessment:
Shafallah Centre: The opening of the centre's new state of the art facility in West Bay in 206 offers worldclass facilities and education for special needs children in Qatar. It includes a 150 bed hospital and stadium.
The Learning Center: This institution is part of Qatar Foundaztion and offers a number of special needs programmes including those for gifted children. Tel: 4927888
