What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking of getting gifts for the maintenance guys here on my compound. They are simply amazing always there when we call them and sweet sweet people. I thought I could gather money from all the tenants and gift them with money. My husband thinks we should buy calling cards. What are your suggestions?

Oh I totally know what you mean. In fact it disturbs me greatly to have people actually rebuke others for tipping generously, or giving something to the guys who clean the streets and the likes. They are like "its their job you know, they are not doing you a favor" Terrible mentality really! I mean whatever happened to charitable intent, gratitude, and generosity towards others.

Just don't be upset when some people respond negatively saying that the guys are paid a salary to do their job, and they don't deserve tips or anything above and beyond their meagre paycheck.

There is growing dissatisfaction in some parts of this society with people who insist on paying their maid 1500/month, or tipping, or giving cash bonuses to tea boys. They feel that it's making things too expensive for 'ordinary' people.

Well that's what I am giving my Club house caretaker, Brought him a Johnnie Walker Red label last year but he insisted on McDowell this year!

Other tenants have agreed, and not to male anyone feel uncomfortable, I thought the best way to go about it is to leave notes on their doors with the idea and option. They can then decide what suits them best.

How are these guys perceived by other tenants. If they dont share your sentiment, everything will fall flat.

Probably the best option like many have said is to give them cash, guess they would be able to decide best for themselves what they would do with it! Inviting them for Christmas dinner is all up to u.

But if there's one thing I've noticed among many expats, specially the bachelors or guys who don't have their family here, is that they tend to send home any money they get and thus hardly ever get themselves anything special. A voucher from somewhere like Lulu and Carrefour would be better cos they could then buy something for themselves that they would normally not buy for financial reasons.

I am also trying to organize a Christmas Eve dinner at our club house and they will be invited as well.

LIQ.. Yes, normally all roommates collect money and buy one computer for the room .. but there are also illegal "internet rooms" where they can call from computer to phone and pay specific charges that are still less than qtel/vodafone.

To collect money from my neighbors. A few have already agreed and hopefully the rest will follow. Thanks again all.

Its better you give them cash may be they prefer shopping in small shops to buy more item instead purchasing less costly items in Carrefour or other big giants.

I agree with mak18 since it is an important thread.

Thkx LIQ, its a great idea, both choices r good as fubar said, money will b sent to their family and calling card for calling their family...sone any of it is a helpfull one and if all people do same then things will change to better.

Rather than collecting all the cash and giving it at once, let everyone in the building give cash individually.

This will take the pressure of tenants who aren't sure how much to give, and it will also show the workers who really values their work the most (and therefore who will get even better service in 2013!).

but if u still dont want to give them cash , i have seen gift cards in carrefour , u can give them that... thy can buy the stuff thy like...i dont know if anyother mall or chain is doing the same .

gift them CASH, let them buy watever they feel like with tat amount.

Also at times give them with food parcels, tat would encourage them to do well in the work.

Excellent but I am not sure they will allow you to collect from the other tenants..

Cash is best, since it gives them the option to purchase the calling card that best suits their needs, but I guess if you bought them the card it saves them from having to do it themselves.

If you give them cash they can send it home to their families.

Anything to show your appreciation for their hard work.

Getting them Calling cards is good option.

Also they would apperciate a cash dontation. Collect it from the compund tenants and distribute it equally.
