The virtue of this month is from the days before Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him). And the significance of fasting two days 9,10 or 10,11 of Muhrram is a Sunnah of Prophet(pbuh).
Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Aashooraa'. He said, 'What is this?' They said, 'This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Moosa fasted on this day.' He said, 'We have more right to Moosa than you,' so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day." (Reported by al-Bukhaari)
Fasting on the day of 'Aashooraa', was obligatory but when fasting Ramadaan was made obligatory, the obligation to fast 'Aashooraa' was lifted, i.e., it was no longer obligatory to fast on this day, but it is still desirable (mustahabb).
The islamic views are much more than what is mentioned above... The household of Prophet (saws), his grand son Hussain (3) was martyred in Muharram, on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram to be specific.
You can read more about why the day of Ashura was really important to Prophet (saws) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husayn_ibn_Ali
Prophet (saws) says: "Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain, his enemies are my enemies and his friends are mine". This is not just mentioned in Shia books, but also authenticated by sunni books. It shows how valuable Hussain (3) was to Prophet (saws).
Here are a few quotes that non muslims wrote about Hussein (3):
Charles Dickens - (1812-1870) English novelists of the Victorian period
If Hussain fought to quench his worldly desires, then I do not understand why his sisters, wives and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore that he sacrificed purely for Islam.
Thomas Carlyle “ (1795-1881) Famous British historian
The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that Hussain and his companions were the rigid believers of God. They illustrated that numerical superiority does not count when it comes to truth and falsehood. The victory of Hussain despite his minority marvels me!
Mahatma Gandhi - (1869 - 1948) lawyer, leader of the uprising in India
In a statement published in 'Young India,'1924:
I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind.... I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of Hussain the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission to save Islam. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle.
He also said: I learned from Hussain how to achieve victory while being oppressed.

The Virtue of observing more naafil fasts during Muharram:
Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'The best of fasting after Ramadaan is fasting Allaah's month of Muharram.'" (reported by Muslim).
This hadeeth is probably meant to encourage increasing one's fasting during Muharram, without meaning that one should fast for the entire month.
Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and Chief of the Messengers, and upon all his family and companions.
Allah's sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…" [al-Tawbah 9:36]
It was reported that Ibn 'Abbaas said that this phrase (so wrong not yourselves therein…) referred to all the months, then these four were singled out and made sacred, so that sin in these months is more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward.
