Do you do it, and how much do you leave if you do?
Back home we leave 15 -20 percent.

Excellent question. I would also like to know what restaurants that takes the tips from the waiter / waitress. So I don't need to tip at all.

I usually pay 10% for food (except for poor service, which I don't give a cent). It would be bigger if there are no service charges indicated in the receipt (except for fast food of course).

Lousy service = 0 tip from me. Good to excellent service = 10% to 30% from me:)

10% maybe 20% depending on the amount and the service

name and shame those establishments that take the tips?? Then I would know which ones to avoid!

Depends if I think they get to keep their tips or not. I know some places the management takes their tips as profit, so I don't give there. But usual between 10% & 15%

Do they get to keep their tips?

By britexpat• 2 Oct 2012 14:23

10% to 15%.

However i hate it when they include service charge and still expect a tip..

10% normally...but if the service is really pathetic, I certainly don't feel obliged to tip.

the act of tipping a form of charity, and as a rule, I will not disclose my charitable acts to anyone(y'know the whole give with the right hand so the left hand dosen't know bit.

However suffice to say it is something we should do if we can, and give how much you can afford and want to, regardless of how much others do.

I tip between 10 and 20% - and I do it with cash so that the waiter has a chance to keep the $$ without management confiscating it for themselves (and this does happen in some places).

5-10% is ideal based on the service, quality of food, etc.

Ok, so if I get this straight, around 10 percent, and don't ever try seating myself when entering a restaurant....thx all

10% in Hotels etc.

1 or 2 riyals petrol

1 or 2 if car hop

5 if cleaning windscreen

5 or 10 for home delivery

BTW in hotels etc. I always ask who gets tips, if for the server alone or if pooled for staff ok

If confiscated by management for breakages etc., believe me it happens here...... Nothing!

Once in the Pearl I had to leave tip with the girl in the next door shop for the waitress as requested. Management took all tips for themselves!

i like tipping barbers as they actually do you a service, waiters on the other hand it depends on how polite they are towards me. I mean all they do is get your food from the kitchen, if anything i should be tipping the cook for the good food he prepared..but no one tips the cook.

I once went to this newly opened restaurant. I walked in from the hot blazing sun and it took me a while for my eyes to get adjusted to the dim lights, so i just walked straight in trying to look for a table. The "head" waiter or whatever he called himself, stops me by putting his hand on my chest like i was there to rob the place and he is like "where are you going?" I said "to find me a table" he is like"No, i'm the so and so its my job to find you a table" his tone was pretty rude so needless to say i returned the favor and gave him a pretty nice time finding me a good table and ordered "good" service...LIKE A BOSS!

Depend on hospitality and respect...

it can touch the extreme level

e.g. 15 to 30

5 -10 riyals tops regardless of my bill!! lesser the luxury more the tips!

(i menat the hotel and not the service!)

i have to make a big conversation similar to the one in " reservoir dogs" before i actually end up tipping! lols

5 to 10 % more or less depends on where you are and what you getting... for example I give tips for the workers in petrol stations for each time I full the tank. I meant to say just give what you think its reasonable coz tips doesnt have a specific range.

Can you give me a percentage? Waiters/waitresses back home get less than minimum wage and depend and expect tips to survive.

I've met a few long time residents that don't tip and give me dirty looks when I sneak tips on the table.

Depends...though mostly it is much less than what I would otherwise as the service is almost close to pathetic here...:(
