My kids are enrolled to start at Sherborne school in January and I am hoping some parents of Sherborne kids can give me some feedback on the school since i am not yet in the country and connected with the school networks. Thanks

Where it is! Travelling there is going to be at least half an hour from Al Waab and other residential areas as I understand it... oh well! I expect the new school they are building is only going to happen in 3 years at least from the look of the plans so can't get too excited about that.

But you know if my kids are getting a great education that is what matters the most!

We're moving to Qatar in a couple of months, and are currently looking for schools. In her current school, my daughter will take SAT tests in Years 6 this year. I couldn't find anything about SATs under curriculum on Sherborne's web site. Any feedback whether Sherborne pupils take SATs in year 6 or not will be appreciated.

My in-laws just moved out of Duhail, and I can assure you that there aren't many compounds out there, and those that are wouldn't really have the facilities you're looking for (they tend to be teeny tiny things).

Glad your kids are happy, Expatlady. It's very reassuring to hear this.

Thanks for your advice Miss Mimi.. I want to come to Doha in Nov to secure a place for the 1st Jan. I will definitely be cruising around those areas to find a place to live. Otherwise Duhail also seems good.  On another note I appreciate your little signature.. makes me laugh!

Edifis- I guess you are an Asterix and Tintin mad but what is the point of your contribution? Have you found The Way? I guess you are wanting to be funny but it ain't working this end.

In regards to housing RikiTikki you're probably best off waiting till you get to Doha.  Compounds in either Al Gharraffa or on Al Waab would be good, but depending on traffic they would be more than 20 minutes from the school.  Al Gharraffa would be better for your husband to get to work.

Whenever I go to the school there is a wonderful, friendly atmosphere. The children have excellent manners and seem to mix very well. Teachers are well qualified, you can check out their details on the school website. My children have made amazing progress since being at Sherborne and they enjoy going to school every day. This is my experience and not 'something Ive just heard'.

Thank you for setting my mind at ease, Doha Explorer. I am thrilled they are getting into such a good school. And yes, I can imagine you found the tone of the previous email hurtful. But Simon was talking about others who had made those comments and didn't quite agree himself. I hope you weren't offended by my reply. Some people can be silly and elitist.. hopefully you didn't think that was me.

I have two children at Sherborne.  I enrolled them the first year it started up in Doha, and I can honestly say it has been getting better all the time.  Its teething problems were minor relative to other new schools here.  Communication with parents is frequent and very respectful, and the teachers are eager to help.  There is also a lot of focus on extracurricular activities, sports and music.  My son and daughter are very happy there.I do wish you well in this important decision, but I must say that the tone of this thread has been somewhat hurtful.  I am a western-educated Arab, and I cannot help but feel that there is an offensive implication that mixing with Arab children is undesired or that they lower the standard of the schools they're in.  I find the notion of "international schools" without Arab students very strange.  Arab IS part of international, you know.Good luck to your children.  The school experience is very important to their adjustment in a new country, and I hope they enjoy Sherborne.

Thanks for all your replies. I guess any international school is going to have arab kids in it. I don't really mind that.. I quite like the diversity. Are their any western schools that don't have arab kids? I can't imagine there are.. unless the one's subsidised by the british govt only allowing brits in. As long as the teachers are well qualified to teach the british curriculum.

I have heard good reports of Sherborne - some white western families complain that there are too many arabs - but what to they expect and in any case this is Qatar. My kids go to another International Schools and mix well with the arab kids - most of whom are just as clever and as good at English as they are

So now I am looking for housing.. perhaps you have some suggestions. I want a unfurnished or semi furnished (just white goods) minimum 3 bed + study Compound Villa with nice pool, gym, shop etc with an OUTSIDE maids room (this is non negotiable for my happiness and for hers) that is not too far from Sherborne.. say max 20 min drive. And my husband works in West Bay. Know anything good??

Wow, I am so relieved! It's amazing to hear that! It's so hard to tell from far away as I am living in Abu Dhabi at the moment. My girls are at an amazing school at the moment so I am really wanting their Qatar experience to be a good one and not hankering after the old school. Thanks guys!

I heard some very good things about it.  Everyone I know who sends their kids there really likes it.  It was originally our first choice but the waiting list was too long.  We realized the American curriculum suited our needs better, but Sherbourne is our second choice after ASD.
