for nationals to be 1% of the population the population would have to grow to about 30 million.

juat saying

Good point Bachus. And if we use demographics over the past 10 years as an indicator, nationals will only be about 1% of the population anyway, so alcohol won't be such a contentious issue.

2022 is a long way away. At the rate Qatar is going, it will be freely available in most places by then. Compare alcohol and pork availability now to ten years ago.

American football teams have about 50 guys a side! how is it even possible to get tired when you can take an entire team off and replace them with another? i admit to watching it often and quite enjoy it though. Lets just agree to disagree! :0P

lost in space .. lmao , in ur case i guess losing all that damn hair was good

American football takes more training, self-discipline, and is definitely rougher.. Football takes just as great of stamina. In rugby, they may run for 40 minutes straight, but they aren't going full tilt.. NFL players go 100% speed every play. Nobody on Earth could go all out for 40 minutes, so they need stoppages.

even with pads, the NFL hits are way more brutal... and the strategy and mental aspect of AF compared to rugby isn't even close. You have to have incredible athletic skill, but just as important is your mind

I like football for the artistic side of it, the fact that all players can really influence the outcome of the game and for the liberty you have. Artistic because running around guy with a ball in your feet is a far most difficult an beautifull thing to do than running with a ball in your hands. And you can do so much more amazing moves...well, not me, me i tackle people, win headers, and run run and run! :) And liberty because even if you have a scheme to respect, when you have the ball or not, if you are leading or not etc..., you always have the oportunity to do something unexpected. You make choices. And i like the fact that all the position are equally important. Well, some gets more attention, sure, but a central defender is really important for its defensive plays...but can score too!

Bree Bree they don't call it the beautiful game for nothing, NFL I do admit I like to watch but whats with all the time out crap, 10 secs into the game, time out. The perfect game of football or as you say soccer is way better to watch than Grid Iron, my opion though, but saying that it is the worlds most played game!!

Must admit that I'm an avid follower of the game - even though its a copy of our Rugby :o)

Got hooked when I worked on a naval base and we had AFRTS.

Loved Joe Gibbs , Theisman and the Washington Redskins.

American Football (especially college) is a better spectator sport - it's the closest thing to watching Roman gladiators this side of the UFC. The plays - offense and defense - are VERY complicated if you choose to follow it at that level, but even a basic understanding is enough to enjoy watching, It's more exciting - things happen, where soccer just seems to roll around interminably. And soccer players dive about the whole time. Which annoys me

it's commitment to a beer product, it will need to wrestled it's host country? If they knew at all that Brazil has an existing law about beer, then why award it to Brazil?

And seeing FIFA as it is, it won't compromise for a NAB. It's not the taste Brit, it's the alcohol that matters and the effect of it.

And why do you think Brazil has such law? Because they know the effect of alcohol to sports expectators, and that's what they want to avoid!

Anyway, FIFA will get his wish, but as I said above, it will be big test for FIFA to make sure no alcohol-related incidents will happen in 2014 WC as it may create the difference about the WC2022.

"FIFA has an agreement with its sponsor, the US-based Anheuser Busch brand Budweiser, and forbidding beer sales would cut into the football organisation's revenues from the games."

So, one answer is that the Host compensate FiFa for the loss of earnings.

Another option is non-alcoholic beer only :o)

FIFA will not have the guts to take away the game from Brazil. FIFA will suffer a loss if at all that happens not Brazil...

when FIFA awarded to Brazil 2014, was the countrywide ban on sales of alcohol on sports venues not in effect?

By flor1212• 20 Jan 2012 14:55
flor1212

can afford to lose that money? Can FIFA afford to lose their "money"?

"..need to keep FIFA happy", precisely what everybody was saying about Qatar, it made so many in FIFA HAPPY? Right?

By fubar• 20 Jan 2012 14:49
fubar

That's pretty much the issue.

Pass the required FIFA laws or the event goes elsewhere.

The host nation has invested all that money and needs to keep FIFA happy, and FIFA knows that.

You don't recall all of these exact same issues arising during 2010 in South Africa?

it seems that we have a NEW world order, FIFA. FIFA demand to pass a law? Wow, so I would presume FIFA can enter a country without security checked? Now I'm beginning to worry what this organizational are capable of? Sounds scary!

It's a contractual obligation between FIFA and the host nation that alcohol MUST be served at the competition venues. There are a heap of other issues that Brazil and FIFA are arguing over.

Whenever FIFA comes in to host an event in a particular country (or countries, if it's a jointly hosted event) they demand that the country pass laws through legislation to controls the venues, intellectual property, sponsorship activity, merchandising, ticketing and so on.

Alcohol sales in venues has been an obligation at all past and will be for all future world cups. This is what all the expats have been scratching their heads about since the decision to host was awarded to Qatar. Why, for instance, did the government ban the sale of alcohol at The Pearl, while at the same time they have invested billions of dollars to host an event where the sale of alcohol is an obligation?

Will the Qataris boycott the World Cup, in the same way they have threatened to boycott Qatar Airways over the provision of alcohol?

precisely the concern will be the Brazil2014. FIFA should hope for no untoward alcohol-related incidents that will occur. And then there will be WC2018 before Qatar will host it in 2022. So FIFA should concentrate on 2014 first and let 2022 be taken care of Qatar!

And FIFA as an organization should refrain from joining the The Pearl issue. they should concentrate on the world cup, not the DINNER cup! Lol!

By flor1212• 20 Jan 2012 14:21

Flor, of course FIFA will prevail, it is THEIR event, and with the millions of dollars of sponsorship at stake there is only one winner. You want to host the event then these are the terms. I'm sure Qatar will comply but will make interesting reading over the coming years.

They were also stating that alcohol MUST be served in the Stadia at the WC, something which Brazil does not allow at the moment. Even in the EPL you can't buy a beer in the stadia (unless you are in a Corp Box).

It is a clear issue that if you want to organize a event like FIFA you must be compromise the own culture(So called LIBERAL) to attract other cultural audience alcohol is very common like some body drinking water when they feel thirsty

Lets see how QATAR will deal this issue..very intresting

By flor1212• 20 Jan 2012 14:03

about alcohol sale (on sports venues?) because of violence among fans, and please note that that is the their law, country-wide.

Now, it will be a good test for FIFA because of sponsorship issues, for sure.

I would pressume that FIFA will prevail, but all hope should be that NO ALCOHOL-RELATED violence might occur during the WC2014 or..............

And Raven, they are talking about WC2014 in Brazil, not Qatar 2022!

By Raven1968• 20 Jan 2012 13:46
Raven1968

So does that mean Qatar will have to allow the sale of alcohol at all venues? Not just in the so called Fan Zones. Will be watching with interest how this one pans out.
