Islamically no permission or paper required from 1st wife...some countries and or systems are not knowledgeable enough and hence have added clause of such points (permission etc) but nothing to do with Islam....country to coutry varies..
Ethically he should inform her pre marriage and he must have to inform her post marriage as the days have to be distributed etc...
People listen up. I had this issue with my uncle... he married again WITHOUT the knowledege of his 1st wife. THIS IS COMPLETELY legal in islam. The only thing he needed was permission from the 2nd wifes wali (guardian)and to make it public knowledge by having a walima or dinner/party to make the marraige public - whether the 1st wife is aware is not a legal requirement and she does NOT sign anything on any paper.
There was also a discussion on islam TV about this which says the above too. However, morally the first wife should know whats happening. If she had any sense, she would know what her hubby was up to and where he is at all times. There are only so many business trips a husband goes on!
yes ur wife should know that u r going to get another marriage. islam is allowed to marry more than one women cause of its benifits of humanity, during war or calamities. BUT U should know that there should be valid reason or back ground circumstance for the second or third marriage just dont miss use the religious flexibility
If you are girl asking the question.. my opinion whatever you do you ALWAYS BE THE SECOND WIFE...how sad for a woman is that.... do you want really to do that????????????? do you want to SHARE your man with another lady??? I am sure you dont.. especially if you are foreigner..They are so many single men out there.. Its better try not to be involved with a married man.. emotionally sucks!!!
I am not sure where everyones info is coming from but the husband need not take permission of any sort from the first wife, nor does she have to sign any papers. She also has no legal recourse should he remarry. If the marriage is done in Sharia fashion both marriages are valid in states that recognize Islamic polygamy.
Now, the implications of a second wife are something all together different and life can indeed be miserable for all involved if the first wife doesn't know about the second and so forth and so on.
I am not a muslim but i have a best friend whose faith is ISLAM... he is like a brother to me , we know each other since childhood.
he has 3 wives...in his succeeding merriages , meaning 2nd and third marriages, he prepared emotionally because there were process to be done which is an unwritten law , meaning you have to sit down with your first wife and ask his consent wheher she is amenable for his second marriage , same process will be done onwards up to 5 marriages as the law allows.
he prepared emotionally because in that case two things may happened whether the wife will say YES OR NO.
I ask him why ? he said i am doing this as my respect to my original wife , blessings come if the family is in union and respect each other.
my point is better to ask the consent , as a sign of respect for each other.
My dear .... from your profile it is clear that you are a female. If my understanding is not wrong, you want to legalize your relationship with your boyfriend (who is already married) by becoming his second wife. Now the question is, where you want to get married and register the marriage? Coz the law is different in every country. If he is a Qatari guy, he will have to obtain an approval from Qatari Government for getting married. In case if he wants to get married to a foreign national, then it will be another long story with the government departments. Now you can figure it out what he needs to do to get married to you. Otherwise the marrige will not be legal and lawfull. Best of luck.
1-I once asked a sheikh and he said the reason for a man to get permission from his first is for respect. The husband should always respect and take into
consideration the wife's feelings.
2-Based on my experience, my husband married me without asking permission from his 1st wife. and you know what? it was really disaster after she found out..anyhow the problem after discovery only matters if you are a man or not.
Lastly, be sure to stand for your 2nd wife no matter what, because it's really bad for a woman to be taken and then taken for granted.... goodluck
There is a clause in the Nikah Agreement (Marriage Certificate), where the husband is made bound to take legal permission from the wife before getting married second time. You may check your Nikah Agreement for that clause whether that is being checked or not.
Anyhow...it's always better to seek opinion from a Scholar on such issues.... Best of Luck :-)

..ohh, and if it is a Qatari guy he only needs the lengthy approval for his first wife, not his second.

In Islam, the first wife has to know about the marriage to another wife.
The validity of marriage is once marriage is announced. If it is kept a secret, then its not a valid marriage to begin with.
I prefer divorce over another marriage. If you want another women, let the first one know, then let her go. Then only marry again.
