Housemaids in Qatar

We have been in Qatar now since March this year and initally found a temporary Ethiopian maid, actually nice girl but very lazy and her sister had a big influence on her especially with her bad attitude. We paid her 1500 as a full time live in maid. We then found a lovely Philipina maid, very clean, hard working and great with our son, unfortunately we could not transfer her sponsorship and so therefore we are now on the hunt again.
Finding a housemaid is not easy, its a very important decision.
We would like to take a housemaid direct from her country as we definately know it would be the best way but sorting out the paperwork with immigration is still maybe a month or so away so in the meantime I have posted ads literally everywhere.
I have to honestly say that I am tired of the ladies and men that are calling me!,
I have ladies who call and the first question is whats the salary?, not whats your family like or where do you live etc etc, I have ladies with expectations of 3000QAR - 4000QAR per month!? they must be superwomen. I then have recieved calls from Nigerian, Indian and Sri Lankan men who want the job?! Furthermore I have husbands who want me to accomodate both the husband and wife and sometimes kids, while she works in my house. Im going completely crazy with the calls now......Why is it so difficult to find a nice maid who will fit into a nice family????!!!!!

Why is this a problem to you? when all you can do is call any maid agency and let them send you resumes. They set up salaries too.

We got one thru an agency and her salary is fixed as everyone else. We plan on increasing her salary if we want her to renew her contract.

She is a great maid, and my son likes her. She takes care of our son amazingly, but has one problem which is she is RUDE. The way she talks, answers, very rude! But hey, all of them are like this so dont expect them to be perfect.

Totally agree. A lot of complaints about the treatment of domestic staff in ME.... could I get someone to clean my house well and honestly???? NO two sides to every story.

By anonymous• 20 Dec 2010 17:37
anonymous

Yes tinkz..we can learn if we want.I just learned cooking when I came here,.I'm like a princess at home..but when i came here I have to learn to survive or i'll end up having cup of noodles everyday..I even felt sad for not learning it before..if i get married and have kids I'll teach them really..I would never want them to be like me when i was in my teens.

I don't think you and me should be saluted....

Whilst we clean our respective houses we are NOT paying someone.

The money we would pay could be gratefully used to help a family somewhere.

I just clean my house because its less hassle and I do it well. I do feel guilty for not finding someone who could use the money.

I have given up getting someone to clean my house.

I paid well and I know that people need the money...but I had all sorts of problems. They could earn more working their day off than their salary for a month

By Oryx• 20 Dec 2010 17:19

Well my friend paid someone 2000QR to feed the cat for a month.

And she used the food, the gas etc....

so that was a good amount of money and she got no respect.

I sympathise with the calls.....try selling a car it is horrendous dealing with the calls.

It's strange that we all want more money, or feel that we are worth more. Yet, we are ready to pay paltry sums to maids and drivers :o(

true lp. and ironically, this happens during the holy month of ramadan. no rest, 1 meal for a day.:-(((

Unfortunately from my experience here over the past 20 years in Qatari, Lebanese, and other Arabic households, the maids were working basically 24 hours a day.

when embassies figured out the standard rate, they also take into consideration the exchange rate between the home country and qatar. in our case, 1500 is like 18,000 php. not bad for a household help. at least they earned something here than staying in the home country where employment is scarce. besides, work around the house is not that heavy and you have plenty of time to rest. unless your employers are abusive:-(

If i ever had the need of a maid, i would not be paying 1500QR a month thats for sure. So i guess there is a choice.

By anonymous• 20 Dec 2010 16:38
anonymous

No, tinkerbell. One can have a price. And if someone wants that someone he/she has to pay that price. Otherwise he/she has to live with the fact that he/she will get minor quality. Obviously the OP is a "superwoman" herself. And that is what she wants. The question is, if she is a "superwoman" why does she need a maid for her children at all????

1500 is not enough if you are working as a manager, engineer, but in Qatar as what nicola said :

arabic /middle eastern familys pay between 700 - 1000, Europeans paying more. Some upto 2000.

By anonymous• 20 Dec 2010 16:32
anonymous

Even if the "market rate" indicates an amount, that doesn't make it right. Does it?

Thank you, actually arabic /middle eastern familys pay between 700 - 1000, Europeans paying more. Some upto 2000. I am more than happy to increase the salary for the right person - after her trial period.

Lincoln Pirate perhaps you should know the market rate before you comment.

Filipina Maids are good. Some are professionals too..they came here even to work as a housemaid bec.it pays bigger than being a teacher in a private school in the Philippines.. They could teach your kids & Filipinas ar known to be very clean, wants everything organized & have proper hygiene. Having 1500QR salary as a housemaid is good enough..

By anonymous• 20 Dec 2010 16:27

I disagree. It's not enough. But that is only my opinion. Go ahead and exploit. Have fun.

By arecel• 20 Dec 2010 16:25

lp, for this position, 1500 is enough with free accomm and food. at least this is the min salary set by our embassy. dont know about the other countries that supplies maids.

By anonymous• 20 Dec 2010 16:23
anonymous

Maybe what you pay is not enough! Would you work for this amount??

well for one, sponsorship law makes it hard to find ANY staff here in doha. the next best thing is to hire a maid from her home country.
