Help!!! My Kids Drive Me Crazy

By xpatadventure

Hi Everyone-

I'd like to share my problem with all mothers that have kids staying in Doha during summer break. Perhaps you can post your comments/advices for me as well as for others.

I know there are summer programs out there. I got the list of these programs from Doha Mums website. They sound very exciting. However, I couldn't afford paying over 2,000 QAR a month especially I have 2 kids at home. Yet they offer part-time programs, I think it would be better that my kids will have friends if they sign up on a regular basis.

Is there any other options that are more affordable around Doha? What do you often do to entertain your kids if not sign up for summer camp?

Thanks.

Novita, you look so intelligent and smart to me.

If it was in another life, and we were not from so different countries, and from so different cultures, and we were younger, and the life was not so boring, and people not so bad, and crisis not that deep, and if we had more time, and no kids, no families, no other matters do do, and money not so hard to get, and jobs not so shitty, and places not so annoying, and streets not so dirty, dusty and noisy, then perhaps one day I could say hi.

Its great finding all these ideas for kids to do this summer! We know kids like to dabble into everything that interests them. Keeping them busy this summer is high on any mom's list.

We have a fun Academy for Dance, Music and the Arts! If they are showing signs or inclination towards being creative, it would be fun to get them started this summer! At IAID they can choose to get into our Visual and Studio Arts courses so they can dabble into various art mediums such as painting and sculpting.

One of the Summer Workshops highlight is a Personality Development course through Drama with Mudita Luthra. She's a columnist at the Gulf Time and has kids enjoying theatre games these days.

There's a performing arts program too that covers acoustic guitar, keyboard, piano and western vocals with really really good music instructors who have performed extensively around the world in the past!

for courses profile, check this out:

We would love to hear from you moms out there and have your kids over this summer! its the Academy's fourth year of doing the workshops and every year has been truly delightful with real fun upbeat courses that will engage your kids!

Courses are so so affordable! great discounts and packages like enroll them in 5 courses and just pay for 4! daily classes from now til September!

Hi there. I know an Academy for Dance, Music and Arts that offers quality trainings yet affordable programs for Summer and through their regular courses.

You may want to try it out (Tel. 432-0974)and inquire for details. They are located at Mansoura and affiliated to International organizations as far as their profile of courses/background is concerned.

I have a 5 year old daughter who is always keen on playing but since there arent any kids of her age in my building its solely upto me to entertain her.Every morning I give her pages to scribble, draw, colour, paint, her old toys....whatever pleases her.Since young children are easily bored its wise to have something else as a stand by too.Keeping coloured dough is a good idea but one can also make flowers and animals with the common flour dough.I read out stories to her, talk to her of our grandparents ,make up my own stories about the sun, moon, stars, infact things we come across in our everyday life.I dont have resources to send her to summer camps and have to take it upon myself which brings in immense joy to both.

there are always cheap ways of keeping your lil ones busy. it is not their fault that they're stuck at home with not much to do... it is too hot to go outside and watching TV all day would drive anyone crazy.

Deedee is completely right! just get on the internet and find them things to do.... and use them to help you with things around the house... everybody = winner! ;o)

WELL .. ITS A HARD TASK. MAY GOD BE WITH U. CHILDREN NEED LOT OF CARE AND ENTERTAINING THEM COST A LOT. I SUGGEST U TO BRING A MAID TO HELP U AT HOME. LET HER SUPERVISE THEM AND ENTERTAIN THEM. LET THEM DO SOME PAITINGS, DANCING AT HOME, DUNNO. DEPENDS ON THEIR AGES. GOODLUCK AND FOR ALL MOMS WHO ARE NOT READY FOR THE REAL PRESSURE, KEEP UR SEXUAL LIFE INFERTILE :P

Wow! Thanks for your suggestions (except the joker ones). Alanostu! What's divorce has anything to do with entertaining children? I think it's a terrible thing to say to them. Perhaps you never have kids or take no responsibility of rasing them yourself.

Observer! is there an English version for www.Doha2010.com.qa website?

I think I'm going to take Deedee, Observer, and Expat Sueno advices. I have been taking them to the pool, malls, indoor playgrounds, even the zoo as well. I even teach them math and English at home which I'm been doing this since they were in preschool. We're sort of an active family. We don't usually stay at home for more than a day. This is our first summer here so we're not that used to it yet.

Thanks again for all your time and inputs.

By the way, I took my children to Georgetown University Library. They have great selection of English books. Unfortunately, not many for children. However, my kids had a great time reading the magazines and using computers. Anyone can joint for 50 QAR refundable.

If your interested in having your children go through 5 hrs a day of exercise (pool activities, sports, track and field , martial arts, volleyball) etc., then sign them up for the 2 week fitness summer camp for kids ages 8-16 at the Sheraton starting July 18. Visit or call the Sheraton Fitness Center front desk for more information.

Thanks for the plug, Novita :)

Doha Mums actually has a fair bit going on over the summer. Our members volunteer to host/organize events - anything from tween/teen craft mornings to pool playgroups to "messy hands" camp days. Take a look at our website in BOTH the Events section (one-off events) AND the Activities section (regularly scheduled, recurring events). You may not find activities for your kids every day, but hopefully it will be enough to tide you over.

Once you join the group you'll also be able to host events yourself - i.e. you can invite kids of similar ages to your pool/house or to just run around one of the mall play areas. Our members have come up with all sorts of great ideas for the summer, which might provide inspiration for you :)

We also have two hotel-based pool playgroups that are registered members (i.e. due to the Flake Factor in Doha we are not offering the pool playgroups as "qualifying events" - sorry).

Anyway. . .yes. . .tons going on in Doha Mums! We do share personal information online so we require that prospective members attend an event before they can join the private website, but the majority of our events are child-friendly (or child-focused). With the reduced traffic in the summer it is easy to get to otherwise "far away" events, too :)

Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!

very limited options for School kids to spend their LONG (almost 3 months) at Home or indoor due to scorching HOT climate during summer.

As many suggested above, living in Qatar, one must be in a position to afford the holiday camp fees. The Observer have provided many good options. If you are staying in a compound then these kids could use club house for playing outdoor games in the evenings and do swimming as well.

For children between the age of 10-14, provide them with computer/laptop to play games online OR catch up some interesting cartoon series.

Well they are some free activities started last Sunday as part of Doha the capital for the Arabic culture..

These activites takes part in the 3 main malls: Land Mark, hayat and Vilaggio. You can have a look at:

www.doha2010.com.qa

you can download the activities catalog from here:

http://doha2010.softarisit.com/Doha2010Files/Banner/File/4.pdf

and they choose to make activities for family and kids since its the summer..

and they will open Aqua park this summer in Doha..

Zoo would be a nice option if the weather was nice (wich is difficult!)

You can also take your kids to the amusement parks found in almost all the malls in Qatar (land, city, mall, sana, hayat, royal plaza,....)

As a mother of 5 I have always refused to pay for someone else to entertain my kids (don't even have a full-time maid in Doha). If you are creative and resourceful as a mother, you can find inexpensive ways to teach and entertain your own children. During the summer I always started every morning with the kids doing chores. Even my 1 year old was assigned a task. Then they did 30 minutes of "school" from simple worksheets (free on the internet) to playing educational games. Then we had a little video or TV time. We often would paint pictures, color, play with playdough or make a simple craft. Once a week I would invite a friends children over to play. Then they in turn would have my children over, giving me a free morning. We went on outings to the mall to go on a scavenger hunt (who can find the ugliest hat?) Never buying a thing. You can get so many many ideas from the internet nowdays. One of my favorites is familyfun.com Goodluck. The only thing holding you back is yourself.

Join this group and find the founder of the group by the name of Roxanne. Her groups have tons of things to do for mums with kids. Ask her if she have anything on in the summer.

Good luck with entertaining you kid. My sympathy for you. x

seriously if you dont have the money to spend on the summer programs you are doomed trying to entertained them. I used to put my son nearly every year in summer nursery. You dont have much other choice. Seriously you DONT HAVE ANOTHER CHOICE.

I am speaking up from the experience.

Flan and Oryx, you know, it actually is not easy with kids here during the summer. unless you invest a fortune, there really is not that much to do. And outside it is too hot most of the day. AND, please guys, neither of you have spend weeks with a kid pent up in the house. so have some mercy.

Or kids...;)

That's hilarious!

I was going to suggest that she send them out to work so they give some money to her and she can relax by the pool.

Maybe you can drive them crazy for a change? LOL!

But on a serious note, no idea. Its really hot here and I'm not sure how to spend your time. There are a few places but mostly in Arabic, so I hope you can get other mothers to help.
