No you do not have to live in a compound. Some families prefer to live in a stand alone villa, some in a compound. Both options could be considered
Compound:
- cheaper (if compared with SA with same facilities)
- facilities (depending the compound)
- often maintenance included in the rent
- security (well in 99% of the cases the security guard is more for decoration than for security but I believe that some people feel more secure in a compound)
Stand alone:
- more privacy
- more often outside room for maid/driver
- available in all areas of Doha (fewer compounds in central locations)
I would advice you to visit some compounds and some stand alone villas to see where you feel more comfortable.

or you can stay in an apartment building with swimming pool/gym near some park.
Well, it's easier IMHO. Neighbours to talk to, kids to play with, relatively safe(traffic wise), usually swimming pool, play areas for kids available.
It all depends on what you want.
