Do you drink the tap water in Qatar?

The Observer
By The Observer

Hey Dear Qlers!

I have this question in my mind for a while! I lived in Qatar for 28 years (almost all my life) and has been drinking only from tap water without filtering it in most of the cases and never suffered from a problem but in recent years I noticed that everyone around me drink bottled water and feel surprised when they know that I drink from tap water. The quality of tap water in Qatar exceeds the water safety standards set by the World Health Organization, according to the third annual report by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

So why doesn’t anybody drink tap water here? am I the only QLer who drinks tab water?

Drink tap water? have you seen the amount of rust when installing a filter? or the itchiness that comes after the shower? my son has been suffering from skin outbreaks and eczema from how dirty the water is. Maybe its clean when leaving Kharama but when it reaches the water tanks installed in buildings which are never inspected or cleaned because there is simply no supervision plus cutting costs. I dont advise to even clean your hands, food or mouth with it unless you have a strong filter.

What bothers me the most is that the drinking water bottles are of plastic 7 which is the nasiest of all in terms of ill health effects. We currently have Nestle and it is the number 7. I've been having endocrinal problems and could this plastic leaching into our water be the problem. It could be even worse for growing children.

If the sodium levels were that high you would taste it. Salty, you know?

ideally they should not add Flouride, sodium, chlorine... or any chemical to water :-(

I hear people saying there are high sodium levels that will destroy our kidneys, but nobody has any proof of this, and the most recent report indicates otherwise:

http://dohanews.co/post/41187843071/despite-new-findings-emphasizing-quality-of-qatars-tap

Can anyone confirm the sodium rumors, or is it just a bottled water myth?

I do with a filter in place. Recently one of the bottled companies salesmen cam asking whether I wanted bottled water to be supplied to my house. I asked him whether there was any difference in the water that his company was giving and the water coming through my tap. He said NO. When I told him, I filter it as well, then he said thats good and went back......

Some of the Water Purifier companies are misleading the Customers. They are stating that the Tap water and bottled drinking water contains unwanted impurities. for which they are performing an experiment in-front of the customers. (actually this is only an electrolysis)

They used to take the tap water/Bottled water in a glass and their water in another glass (the water getting from their water purifier) . Then they put electrodes to both glasses which will be connected to a electric line . after 2/3 minutes the bottled water/tap water colour get turn brown . but the water from the water purifier will the same as before.

Now they starts to convince the customer that this brown color is due to the invisible dirt present in the water

or more minerals are present in the water (depending up on the situation and customers) .

Actually the brown color is due to Total dissolved solids (TDS) present in the tap/Bottled water . WE need some mineral in the drinking water water

These Water Purifier companies using electrolysis method to do confuse the customer

I have been working in the Quality analysis department in a Bottled water Company . According to my Experience , the Tap water is enough good to drink . But we have to remove the dirt and Chlorine. for this we can use a pp filter and a activated carbon filter . this will cost around 200 Qrs.

The TDS of the Tap water in Qatar is only less than 100 Ppm and Hardness is abt 60 PPM. the Na+ level presence is sodium) not as much.

Bottled water companies and Water Purifier Companies are trying to mislead us to promote their products.

the water maybe drinkable clean but it's the plumbing and pipelines I can't trust hence I just stick to bottled Nestle via the water filter.

Why we can't check with the Authorities I mean Doha municipality and Qatar Health Dept to guide us what is better for their citizens.

Be safe rather regret later; Health is prime factor

Prolonged use of TAP water will drain off your kidneys without immediate symptoms due to consumption of unwanted mineral saltsand and lack of required minerals. Better switch to bottled water.

Personally, I don't, because I saw the inside of our water tank. Better be safe than sorry.

Ever thought about the quality of the pipes running from your water tank into your home faucets?

Ever heard of rust?

Iron + oxygen -> RUST!

4Fe + 3O2 -> 2Fe2O3

I can assure you that they are not using aluminium pipes where you live :)

Also, do you know how much SALT tap water contains?

By jameskgm• 24 Mar 2012 16:30

The tap water they supplying might be good. But if you have a look inside your buildings water tank you will not drink it anymore. you will find even dead rodents in most of the tanks because they are not properly closed and cleaned at regular intervals.

when i look at the bottom of kettle, this puts me off from tap water.

Has some one noticed the clothes (new cotton shirts) loose their shines and starts looking months old only after one wash, i use softner as well but dont know if it is the water or washing liquid or i am not selecting the right program.

might have a filter installed for drinking water, if the observer is doing it for last 28 years then Y not

Some areas have high chlorine content you can even smell it. Also, can't trust the tanks being used by the building or villa. Invest in your health.

Optimus_prime. I wouldn't worry about the Calcium deposits. I'm from the south of England and our water is drawn from chalk hills so it leaves deposits. It might not do your kettle or shower unit much good but it doesn't hurt you. It does, however, make the water very hard. As for hard and soft water there's no health impact to my knowledge.

As young qatari mentioned not only the rusty old pipes that could contaminate the water, but also the storage tanks that will have residue of dust, dirt and other contamination which the landlords keep a blind eyes to. Apart from that try boiling the tap water, you will notice Calcium deposits over time, what bottled company may usuaaly do is covert the tap water which is hard water and convert it to soft water using water softeners and then purify that water by removing chemicals used while softening and adding some minerals. I have no idea thogh which water is good for drinking hard water or soft water.

Tap water is always better that bottled water, I used to use this for the last 7 years. You can use one ceramic filter just to filter that.

Tap water is better than plastic bottled drinking water. But problem is our rusty pipes and fittings.

I'm happy to accept that the water is drinkable from it's source but concern for me is the state of the 'drinking water' trucks that I see on the road. I'm not convinced that vehicles that look that bad on the outside are pristine and hygienic on the inside.

What you drink from the tap is as same as what you drink from the bottles if the water is bottled in Qatar or middle east except it does not come from Europa. That is why you or others are still alive. However the inner surface condition of pipelines which carries the produced water from Ras Laffan to reservoirs and Doha is hard to predict due to temperature and contaminants impact. Be relax that produced water in Qatar is safe to consume with regards to chemical limitations. So it is a bit dilemma.
