Do you really need to use laundry detergent?
Just using hot water and beating my clothes combined with leaving them in the sun for 24 hours seems to do a great job, they smell great without any chemicals.

They smell great to you maybe :). Leaving your clothes out for 24 hours in the sun is a fast track to their disintegration.
