DOHA: In a heart-wrenching accident, a five-year-old girl , Dana Walid Sakr (pictured), studying in the Lebanese School in West Bay was knocked down by a four-wheeler in front of the school early in the afternoon on Sunday. The girl was rushed for emergency medical care but died on way to the hospital.

The girl was crossing the road and stopped midway on the road to pick something up when the four-wheeler suddenly appeared and knocked her down.

The mother of the victim, who was waiting on the other side of the road, watched in horror as she saw her daughter knocked down, an eye-witness said.

The four-wheeler, driven by an Arab national, was parked on the other side of the road in front of the school, so it had not picked speed yet, eye witnesses told The Peninsula yesterday.

The driver has been arrested. But the school management could not be contacted for comment as it was closed yesterday as a mark of respect for the deceased student.

A senior traffic official from the National Road Safety Campaign confirmed the tragic death of the student, while the school website carried a condolence too.

Traffic official Fahad Mubarak Al Abdullah told this newspaper: “It was the mistake of the driver as well as the parent of the child. Children should be dropped near the main entrance of a school and they should also be picked from there.”

If a child is crossing the road, the parent or someone older must catch his or her hand and guide. “A team of investigators visited the spot. It was a tragic incident,” he commented.

People should drive carefully near schools even if there are no speed breakers on the roads nearby, added Al Abdullah.

The death of the five-year-old has triggered serious concern among parents. Mothers who have children attending the Lebanese school voiced concern regarding the lack of safety outside the school premises after Dana was hit. The incident took place at around 1:45pm.

“Proper school zones should be implemented and action should be taken… I am worried about the safety of my children…,” said Carla Bay, a mother of two children who go to the school.

Bay said she had been worried about this for quite some time as she had noticed there were no speed humps along the United Nations Street, the road near the school; no cross walks for pedestrians; no speed limit signs and no volunteers to help pedestrians in crossing the road.

Another mother, whose children go to the school, said the roads near the Lebanese School - Qatar and the Qatar International School are always packed with vehicles when students get off school.

“It is a small two-way road and vehicles are parked on the sides, and people are always in a hurry to go home… the Traffic Department should see to this.”

My condolences to the family and no, this life is not fair. That is how we learn as humans from the examples of others. If there was no unfairness, how would we know what fairness is? This was this child's Qadr (pre written in her book) we all have this appointment with death, there is no escaping it for any of us. Some sooner some later. Maybe her particular incident, as sad and as tragic as it is, will serve as an example and wake people up to make some changes to protect their children and not take for granted this very short life we have all been given. To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return...

Life is a gift from god. God will protect the gift given to you.it is upto you to be happy or sad or any kind of feelings. to make life fair it is upto u..yes sometimes destiny and fate acts up but it is upto you again.how can you let a 5 year old cross the street alone? Were the parents fair on the child?????THEN THEY CRY WHEN THE CHILD IS DEAD????????????????THATZ RIDICULOUS!!!!

i take my three year old son to school everyday. I always hold his hand until he is either in school or in the car. It IS NOT POSSIBLE to drop/pick your child up from the gate. These huge cars block the road, double park and there is no space for any other car to move forward, forcing us to park at a distance and walk. Some MASSIVE HUMMERS/GMC cars only have one child in it with a driver and no parent. Where are the parents? I think its the parents responsibility to ensure kids are safe, not the maids, drivers or anyone elses.

In Dana case, sad as it is, could it have been prevented if the mother was holding the childs hand? Why didnt the driver look where he was going? DRIVERS YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW YOU ARE IN A SCHOOL AREA. GO SLOW, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN and BE CAREFUL!!! I have seen so many drivers being silly...only today i had a go at a indian man who triple parked and as we were crossing the road, decided to accelerate...!!!

Condolence to the family of Dana. At this point in time, we should not blame the mother anymore. What has been done is done. Maybe the good thing that should be done is to make necessary action or safety precautions, so as this incident will not happen again.

well it is the worst thing that a parent can undergo seeing his or for that matter any body being hit by a vechile. All my condolonce to the unfortunate parents and i wish god give them the strength to come out of this shock. I like to say that it is really strange that i have seen small children left all alone on streets and no body seem to care or bother about their safety , it is strange such parents exist. It is a pitty that all of us are equally responsible for such accidents and unless each one takes care of our children this world will not be safe for them

what does title have to do with the post???

Why the school wouldn't insist on putting the signs with the speed limit 35-40 km/h in the school areas till?

and main thing, parents must be more careful.. WTH is that, to send your 5-years old child to cross the road alone.. IN QATAR, where all drivers are crazy???! In my opinion it is a criminal negligence... This is your child! how one can send his/her baby to cross the street which is packed with the cars??
