Best nationality for maid

Bachus
By Bachus

I am looking for advice about choosing a nationality of a maid.

I am filling out the sponsorship paperwork, and my HR office said that I need to select a nationality BEFORE I meet potential maids. Even if the new maid does not work out, future maids will have to be of this nationality. It's possible to change this, but they say it's a huge hassle.

Anyway, does anyone have some advice? Any personal experiences you'd like to share are most welcome. We're a family of Western expats with young children and are likely to be in Qatar for 2-3 years. Until now we've coped with outside help, but we're ready for a live-in.

"Best nationality for maid"... Really?

Has discrimination, racism and bigotry become such a norm? Basing judgments and performance on nationalities?

Just remember, what goes around comes around... May god help us all...

Nationality may not be so important as the way you will treat them. Remember maids are human being and naturally want respect back. So my advice is get one who likes children and speaks decent English.

One important thing: List all the DOs and DON'Ts in a contract and get the maid to sign it thereby agreeing that she has fully understood the contract very well. Tell her that the child will decide whether to keep her or not. And of course, do not forget the probationary period.

Best of luck to you.

filipina are hardworking people even they ask for good salary its worth their work and they can speak and understand english, they will run away if they are mistreated, but if employer will treat them good it will not be a regret hiring one :)

Does anyone have any horror stories about maids they've employed? I keep reading stuff about them stealing husbands, leaving small children alone and ringing up huge phone bills on their employers land lines?

If your wife is there full time you could get a "runaway" who works during the day..But it would'nt work if your dream is to leave the kids to the maid for the evening/night out..It is never safe with any kind of maid, anyway..It helps to have trustworthy friends for that matter...

Why would anyone run away from a good employer?.. on the contrary why would you not runaway if your being mistreated??...DDUUUUUHH!....

It's about time you gave warning to the idiots and moroons who comment relentlessly on the posts. We have had enough of these nonsense. Scums of the earth.

Now back to the topic - @Bachus How about your experience with the part-time maid? If you are contented with her work then you might consider hiring her under your sponsorship or if thats not possible then get one from her country of origin. If you have friends, ask around. They might recommend somebody.

The reason for runaways is that they are treated badly by the employer. So if you treat them nicely, regardless of nationality, I think they will work hard for you. They will do the extra mile, so to speak.

Good luck on getting a good housemaid.

why they descriminate our nationality? (philippine) all the nationality has a bad and good characteristic....its just happen that some had bad luck and have their reason why they run away.....think off....if you dont have bad intention or your treat your housemaid good, you dont have to worry even in a single minute....

MissT... And it pays off on how your maid give services to you. In the long run... their services towards you would become unconditional. Keep it up! May The Great Almighty increases the number of your Race.

please remove on your option recruiting a filipino maid as the Philippine Labor Office has initiated a ban for direct hiring on maids. You must go to an accredited recruitment agency which charges in between 8k to 10k rials. Unless you are an Al Thani you are not exempted from the rule.

By Elegance• 29 Feb 2012 16:57

Notice the nationalities of some of these idiot posters--more good reasons not to get a filipina or Indian maid.

Britexpat-- Of course there are good and bad in all nationalities, but he has to choose one.

Ha ha. Very funny. Seriously. We're new to this and what to do the best by our family.

My wife is at home, so mostly we need someone to help clean. Sometimes the maid would need to help watch the children, but mostly it will be cleaning and cooking. Basic English is essential but fluency is not essential.

And we aren't looking for a bargain either. Domestic labor is already inexpensive enough. A good fit is what is most important.

or australian lol!! these question is funny

Better English in Fillipinas is true, but I would choose other nationality. IMO these are not hard working enough and they expect extra days off and demand higher pay. They also have a reputation as runaways, and because their population is so large in Qatar it is easy for them to hide.

Better to choose other country. Most will have basic English anyway and will learn quickly. Better that they do not speak much and simply do as they are instructed.

Indonesia is good but sometime hard to get. Sudan same but very cheap and good value. Over all, Sri Lanka is good for value (less than half the price of the Fillipinas), and they are young and work very hard.

Still there are not guarantees with any nationalities. This is why you have the trial period of employment. But whatever you do, start by giving her few extra freedoms and lowest wage possible. You can then grant extras as she earns them with good service.

Good luck.

You might want to consider the Philippines. Their English is generally better, and that might be a factor for you if you have young children.
