AMERICAN SCHOOL DOHA OR QATAR ACADEMY?
By labellydancer •
I have a boy in 9th grade and school is very important to decide wether we move or not. I understand they are very expensive schools. American International Schools are very expensive every where. I would like to know which of these two school is better with good, certified, qualified teachers, etc, etc.
Thank you in advance
ik this is thirteen years old but this is for anyone surfing the internet in the future in hopes of a comparison of the two schools. I can’t speak all that much on Qatar Academy, but what I can say is that I know many students who switched from QA to ASD, but not many vice versa. ASD is ranked as the best school in Qatar, from its incredibly good facilities to its trained teachers. It now offers both the AP and IB curriculums and although it’s certified in New England, I know many graduates who have gone to schools in TX and other states and it didn’t prove to be a problem. if you’re looking for top quality education with lots of options, ASD is for you, and no other schools in the country can really compare in that respect. I’m pretty it offers the most AP classes in Qatar too. some graduates have gone to Ivy leagues and other schools of that caliber, such as Stanford. it’s competitive pursuits, both physical and academic, have often resulted on success, both within the country and the region. that being said, it has its flaws. there is no mental health support for students, the world languages are terrible (except if you’re a native Arabic speaker bc they split the natives and non-natives), there is a lot of racial and religious insensitivity from teachers, and the administration is not very flexible. however, I’m sure it’s worse at other schools in Qatar.

I’m pretty it offers the most AP classes in Qatar too. some graduates have gone to Ivy leagues and other schools of that caliber, such as Stanford. it’s competitive pursuits, both physical and academic, have often resulted on success, both within the country and the region. that being said, it has its flaws. there is no mental health support for students, the world languages are terrible (except if you’re a native Arabic speaker bc they split the natives and non-natives), there is a lot of racial and religious insensitivity from teachers, and the administration is not very flexible. however, I’m sure it’s worse at other schools in Qatar.
ik this is thirteen years old but this is for anyone surfing the internet in the future in hopes of a comparison of the two schools. ASD is more expensive, but it also has been around longer and has a more established extra-curricular program (strong athletics). The school is more high-tech than QA, and parents are expected to regularly check online for info about their child's classes, etc. Very active PTA and parent involvement, no uniforms for kids, predominantly (60% guesstimate) North American enrollment, but much more internationally mixed among it "others" (Danish, Korean, South African, Filipino, Qatari, Brazilian, Dutch, Egyptian, Singaporean, etc.). If you're coming from the States, your kids will feel more at home here (the school celebrates Halloween and other holidays, has a prom for juniors and seniors, sponsors dances and lots of other fun activities, etc.).
QA is cheaper, has less parental involvement, kids wear uniforms, extra-curric/sports are somewhat weaker than ASD's. Student body is about 50% Qatari, 50% other (and a large percentage of these others are expat Arabs). School is officially a national school that employs international teachers and offers an international curriculum. As such, you will find that the school does not sponsor co-ed dances or anything similar that promotes boys and girls mixing too much (because it caters to national/Qatari sensibilities). Classes are mixed (except for PE) but a school dance with both boys and girls attending would be out of the question at QA.
Both schools have well-qualified staff/teachers and offer good academic programs, foreign languages, Islamic studies.
I second the earlier comment about available spaces in both schools, however. To my knowledge, both schools are basically maxxed out and have few if any openings at present. Unless your family works for a big company that has secured spots/contracts with the schools, you should plan on the liklihood that you will have GREAT difficulty finding an opening for your child there. Start researching your second, third, and fourth choices NOW and get names added onto wait lists as soon as you can.
Good luck!
MagicDragon, the SAT is a college entrance exam and is accepted by just about every university in the US.
It doesn't have anything to do with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
The school's accreditation means the school (curriculum, facility, faculty, etc) has met standards set by the organization. An accreditation team physically inspects and evaluates the school on a regular basis. The school has to maintain those standards in order to keep their accreditation.
There is no reason to believe that Texas, or any other US state, would have a problem with the accreditation.
I think QA is using some sort of British course or method while ASD is using pure American method of studies.
notfromhere, other US states have other accreditation offices and don't accept each other's accreditation. SAT, for example is accepted only by a certain number of Universities, other don't accept it.
BUT, both are difficult to get into. You'll want to check into how many spaces are available in the 9th grade. I don't mean to scare you, but many people arrive in Doha and cannot get their kids into one of their top-choice schools. Get on the waiting lists as soon as you decide to come to Doha.
What do you mean it doesn't count?
ASD is "only" accredited by the "New England Association". As you know, it doesn't count in Texas, for example.
ASD is the only US-accredited school, if that matters to you.
ASD will launch IB program from the next year as well btw.. so basically it will give your son an opportunity to choose between AP and IB programs if he joins that school... Good luck!
zryzor- where do you get your info that QA doesn't have many Qataris? It has many Qatari students.

May your dreams take you travelling all through your life.
ASD has only has about 40 althanis and about 90 other qataris whereas QA doesnt have many qataris. i prefer ASD because they have better facilities and teachers with outstanding expierence and great degrees.Only about 30% of ASD students are arab with American or Canadian backronds.
Was good to read about QA having good reputation, since this will be the school my children will have to go, parens as employees being part of Qatar Fundation. My only concern is the ratio between qatari and non qatari (western) students. Does anyone know about this?
thank you
I GOT MANY QUESTIONS ANSWERED .....NOW....WE NEED TO DECIDE TO GO OR STAY...THANK YOU!!
Never take someone for granted, you might wake up one day and realize that you have lost a diamond
Both schools have good reputations - you have to decide what would be a better fit for your son. ASD might seem expensive compared to QA, but QA is subsidized by Qatar Foundation. Compared to American schools in the region (Saudi, Emirates, etc.), ASD is quite reasonable. For your tuition at ASD you get highly qualified teachers, an excellent facility, ample and varied resources, a friendly student population where new students are usually assimilated quickly, and most typical activities of an American high school, but with an international twist. It also offers extensive AP courses. QA is an IB curriuculum and while I know less about it, I have heard good things from teachers and parents. Both would ultimately be what your son makes of them.
