Stray Cats
By michellebailham •
I live on Al Jabor Compound near to the Airport, we have like everywhere in Doha a problem with Stray Cats. I fear they may be diseased and do not like my children going near them, I am fond of cats don't get me wrong but feel the goverment should be rounding these cats up and spaying them to reduce the numbers roaming the streets, entering houses and rummaging around and worst of all ending up dead on the street from being run over.
The whole attitude towards cats/dogs over here is appalling...very sad!
2020 Olympics, actually I am talking about current activities.. I personally know few fellows who is currently doing great job! But I believe, it was some action from the government side few years back as well.. not sure though. I think you know better..
And I do agree with you, yes partially the problem is caused by people who is abandoning poor animals.
And I do agree with Xena, Qatari government’s attitude in this situation is great. Enough to mention totally free spaying/neutering procedure at government vet clinic. This is awesome!
If you read the entire thread (the relevant bits) you will see that Cats in Qatar assist with the TNR programme Xena spoke about, they don't actually do it themselves.
qatarisun--thank you for your post. I did not see it before I posted above. I thought it was the gov. Didn't realize it was a private group.
Not at all Korly. I try to be as clear as possible in my posts, but English is my third/fourth language. I am hardly one to back down from a disagreement.
Arabs make up the largest expat community in Doha. And like animals. Although I do not keep cats, I do keep horses and appreciate the connections people can have with animals. By government campaign I am referring to is a number of years ago an effort to educate on the need to sterilize cats/sterilize them. At least that is how I remember it, but to be honest I did not closely follow it as my family does not keep cats. I assumed this action was the reason why the stray cat population dropped. But maybe something else. I don't really care about it, but I do take issue with slanderous attacks on my character.
2020 Olympics - Well then what sort of "campaign" are you talking about?
Because your wording, to me, also seemed detrimental.
"A while back the government had a campaign against them.

Oh and watching your previous history, I doubt you were incorporating those of Arabic decent within your "Expatriate" analogy.
Its interesting how your worded your post - almost that you could back away from what you were really saying, when someone much more knowledge-able about animal matters in Qatar, such as Xena, came along.
Molten Metal, what's your problem?
michellebailham, there is a group of volunteers, who is actively participating in trapping these cats and spaying/neutering them. They have a page on Facebook "Cats in Qatar". You can contact them. They always need and don't mind some help ;)
Xena--many Arabs are expats too. And by campaign against them I did not mean killing them. Please stop making negative assumptions about intentions.
besides Death, Rod and JJJ really know what you are talking about, do you?
Michellebailem, the Animal resources department on Airport Road do a TNR (Trap Neuter & Release) Program where by cats are trapped (by yourself or ministry), and are taken to the ARD and then neutered. Two days later they will be released back to the area they are taken from.
You can do this yourself - If you contact Cats in Qatar (See Facebook page) and speak to a lady called June, she will guide you through the entire process.
2020Olympics, there has never been a government campaign against them - don't talk absolute nonsence - The government provide a service for strays - many other countries don't. Hats off to Qatar for trying to control the stray population.
BTW.... I'd like to inform you, that most westerners have their animals neutered - what we don't seem to find is those of Arabic culture embracing the spay/neuter concept - So lets guess where all these cats come from - again, don't talk of things you know absolutely nothing about!!!
Here comes the picker of arguments.....
Yes, stray cats are real problem. It was what happens when expats bring their pet cats, let them breed and then abandon them. A while back the government had a campaign against them. Time for another one see. Either that or the summer heat will reduce their numbers.
but yours' was IN middle of road,,,
that is the difference ...
Missteacher, I saw the same dog I think you are talking about at the junction of al Saad and the Expressway, he was being beckoned by a young couple who had stopped to help him.
I will Rod.b.d.b. thnx for the info....
Yeah it happens but it shouldn't. Animals should be taken care of, not neglected.
Get in touch with Cats in Qatar. They will be able to tell you about a capture/neuter/release program that the Gov't vets do.

I don't doubt the english of the poster, but it happens..
''So sad.....I saw a stray dog on the middle of the highway leading up to Landmark. Looked dazed, had bald patches and needed
do what? Get another shipment of stray dogs this time?
So sad.....I saw a stray dog on the middle of the highway leading up to Landmark. Looked dazed, had bald patches and needed fed. So cruel :(
That must be Smoke and his Bhuudddies.. :D
Jokes apart..
its so true .. and very sad to see all those cats killed by cars on the streets :(
Municipally should seriously do something about it..
Complain to muncipality sure they will help or ur compound mangement
that should be government by the way - thnx jjj75
This is true - I love cats, have one myself (neutered of course) but the unneutered ones are a nuisance. Part of the problem is that (on my compound)people feed them so they breed even more and 'invite' their friends to the party.
Sadly if the municipality became involved, I don't think they would spay them - I suspect they would go to that great mouse chase in the sky. QAWS may be able to give you some advice as to what to do.
