Playstation 3 won't read disk

My playstation 3 stopped reading disks, i.e when you insert a game nothing happens.
I took it to 51 east service centre and they said they do not repair PS3's and they have to send it to Dubai which will cost QR1000!!
Can anybody help? Where else can I take it to get it fixed?

How long have you had your PS3?, has your PS3 updated with the latest firmware?

try cleaning the lens...

buy a cleaning disk - most of the times it does work. if not..just buy a new one
