QRCS promotes health, safety awareness in schools
As thousands of students returned to school last week for the beginning of the new academic year, the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched its latest QRCS School Program.
The program is organized under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE).
Through the program, QRCS engages the youth at different schools in Qatar to raise their awareness of social solidarity and responsibility.
It also focuses on preparing student leaders who would contribute to the protection of the school and community against disaster and environmental risks.

The QRCS program has been very successful in the past few years in terms of the number of schools and students registered with it.
According to reports, the academic year 2016-2017 saw 1,200 attendants from 32 schools, compared to 2,300 and 45, during the following academic year.
In 2018-2019, the program made its paradigm shift, with 82 schools registered and 8,290 students, teachers, administrative staff, and supervisors attending the program’s lectures and drills, which were delivered by a group of well-trained medical trainers and disaster management volunteers from QRCS.
In the new academic year, QRCS is coordinating closely with MoEHE to maximize the benefits of the program for both the students and the society members.
The QRCS School Program has three components:
- The health program entails first-aid training and health education on nutrition, hygiene, communicable diseases, home safety, oral health, and other relevant topics.
- The ‘Safe School’ risk reduction program seeks to improve community disaster preparedness and effective response
- The ‘Social Peace and Integration’ program organizes lectures to instill positive values among school students, such as interactive communication, open-mindedness, behavioral discipline, psychological balance, and mutual respect.
