Doha, Qatar – 20 April 2016: Josoor Institute, a centre of excellence for the sports and events industries, inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), successfully completed the fourth block of its flagship certificate and diploma programmes on “Major Events Management” and “Football and Sports Management”.

The fourth block of the 18 months, long-term programmes was delivered between 10-14 April 2016 at the Qatar National Convention Centre. The certificate and diploma programmes consist of six blocks and are designed and delivered in partnership with Georgetown University, University of Liverpool and Leeds Beckett University. The programmes are part of Josoor Institute’s ongoing commitment to building sustainable sports and events industries in Qatar and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region by developing human capital.

Commenting on the progress of the programmes over the past year, Mushtaq Al-Waeli, Executive Director (Acting) of Josoor Institute, said: “With the completion of the fourth block of these programmes, we move closer to realising our vision of producing a generation of pioneers that will develop, grow and transform the sports and events industries in the MENA region.”

He further stated: “The programmes have on board delegates from leading organisations in Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia among which are the SC, Aspire Academy, Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Football Association, Ministry of Interior, Saudi Professional League and Oman Football Association. These delegates have now been with us for over a year and we are able to witness a continuous development in them as they go back to their organisations and apply the learnings from the programmes.”

The learnings of this block were focused on strategic marketing and communications, event production and law, and venue and event management.

As part of the “Football and Sports Management” programme, the delegates visited the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, home of the Al Sadd Football Club. During the tour, the delegates experienced first-hand the process of staging football matches and learned about the different disciplines and factors involved in operating sports venues and events.

The programmes featured several special guest speakers including Abi Ekoku, business entrepreneur and former international athlete and professional rugby player with an impressive career in sports, event management and consultancy in the UK.

Commenting on his experience with Josoor Institute’s programmes, Abi Ekoku said: “While it is easy to talk about 'legacy', to deliver it is the real challenge. Qatar is addressing this head-on, with the same aspirational approach that has delivered some innovative and dynamic sports and event venues. The delegates at Josoor Institute’s programmes are very well prepared and driven. I am very impressed with the calibre of the participants in the programme, who have a clear understanding of Qatar’s vision for legacy and are all fully committed to implementing ideas generated within their areas of expertise.”

Starting from August 2016, Josoor Institute will expand its educational services by offering stand-alone modules. These will be delivered over a period of two days and will be part of the ongoing certificate and diploma programmes. The new modules have been designed to cater to sports and events industries enthusiasts who cannot commit to the full 18 months, long term programme. Amongst the topics to be discussed during the first edition of this new initiative are the financial context for sports and football, people management in the events industry and applied professional practice for the events industry.
