Education in Qatar: learning for the future
Whilst almost all oil and gas rich Arab nations have invested heavily in their educational systems, it is evident that in terms of education spending, Qatar has hit the fast-forward button. The country has become one of the most significant global players in educational progress and investment, supporting a huge amount of projects ranging from basic literacy and numeracy to cutting edge university study and research.
Qatar’s has constructed state of the art universities, and revamped the entire school system since the findings of a comprehensive education reform study in 2001, Education for a New Era, which recommended improved vocational training and founded an international forum for deciding the best modes of innovation and their efficient implementation.
All these initiatives have been undertaken with a focus upon Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which has always argued that, if and when the gas and oil runs out, the best education system possible will be essential to the creation of a viable, advanced economy moving forward.
A well-organized education system
Qatar’s School system is divided into three categories. These are elementary level (for 6-12 years of age), preparatory level (for ages 12-15 years), and secondary level (for ages 15-18 years). For all Qatari students, elementary and preparatory level education is mandatory. Students willing to progress to the secondary level may select an academic course aimed at acquiring higher education from university.
Additionally, there are many vocational courses for Qatari residents who want to equip themselves in the skilled or semi-skilled employment sectors. Recent programs have also added training for girls in categories such as secretarial and office work skills.
International standard
In schools, universities and other educational institutions in Qatar, international standard educational curriculums are followed. This indicates that standards of education are aimed to be of the best quality. All schools in the independent sectors are closely monitored by the Supreme Education Council. Additionally, educational institutions run by the Qatar public sector offer free education for the children of government employees.
Knowledge based economy
A knowledge-based economy is seen as essential to the formation of modern Qatar and has gradually become the foundation for solid economic growth, which in turn leads to a major enhancement of international competitiveness.
Well developed study systems, international level of curriculum standards, skilled teachers and the latest facilities now underpin and inform both the teaching and learning process in Qatar, and the nation is now regarded as the regional leader in the educational realm. The most important result of all this investment in education is that Qatar has expanded rapidly, witnessing rapid and comprehensive development in real jobs and training.
There is no doubt that Qatar is transforming itself from a fossil fuel to a knowledge based economy, and in the process of preparation for national success in a post-oil future, Qatar’s political, social and educational leaders are beginning to achieve their ultimate aim—to equip the country with a self-reliant, highly educated, highly skilled work-force to drive and support a sustainable economy for the future.
