Which hand do you use....

...to operate your mouse, or mobile phone when dialling/texting?

The reason I ask is that I'm right-handed, don't consider myself to be ambidextrous (sp.?) but have been observed texting with my left hand, yet had never given it a moments thought, but I operate a mouse with my left hand with all the dexterity of a dog trying to open a tin of 'Pedigree Chum'..., as for writing with the 'wrong' hand, forget it!!!

Couldn't find the right category for this one.., sorry!

Yes, Torque, that was what I meant.

Actually, when I sent a text this morning (I'm right handed) I noticed I held the phone in my right hand and hit the keys with my left hand!

Could be the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing? :D

I think the 'affliction' (grin) is also sometimes known as having a 'right hand and a left foot'.

It's a brain thing lol

jauntie, I do quite understand where you're coming from.

The answer you gave was brilliant as it put a scientific reasoning behind such things.

My post really was asking others if they noticed the same sort of things that I did, once it'd been commented about my using different hands for different actions/jobs etc.

When you pick up something, throw something, pull something, why do you use one hand rather than another, irrespective of your natural handing? That I think is the answer your post was looking to clarify.

Do you agree?

Torque is good!

Torque? Are you asking the reason WHY you use a different hand to text with? (which is what I thought you meant) or are you just asking others which hand they use for mouse or text. Because that is how people are answering.

May be I'm on the wrong track, but since you mentioned you aren't ambidextrous, I answered on the assumption that what you wanted to know was WHAT caused you to use your left hand to text, instead of your usual right hand, yes?

I use my elbows for typing

hehehehe

well, i don't find it weird.. it's probably based on which hand you are accustomed to using for certain tasks.

or because you're comfortable with using that hand for that task..

It seems to be to do with activities which require you to take aim.

My husband is right handed in everything except cricket and golf, which he plays left handed. I was curious so did some research to see what this phenomenom is known as.

It's CROSS-DOMINANCE

"Cross-dominance, also known as mixed-handedness, mixed dominance, or hand-confusion, is a motor skill manifestation where a person favors one hand for some tasks and the other hand for others. For example, a cross-dominant person might write with the left hand but grab primarily with the right. Ambidexterity is a well-known variant of cross-dominance, but cross-dominant people may also be left or right-handed rather than ambidextrous.

It can also refer to mixed laterality, which refers to a person favoring eyes, ears, feet, or hands on one side of the body. A person who is Cross-dominant can also be stronger on the opposite side of the body that they favor; for example, a right-handed person can be stronger on the left side. Cross-dominance can often be a problem when shooting or in activities that require aim".

So, there you go! I suppose you 'aim' at a key when you text on your phone, but you don't have to 'take aim' when you use your mouse. Same as my hub has to take aim when he addresses a cricket or golf ball, but not when he writes.

:D
