Qatar’s “Artists in Residence” programme was launched in March 2015 and is expected to kick off in Mid-September.
The Old Doha Fire Station Artists in Residence is nestled in a buzzing artistic part of the city. The main aim of this programme is to bring in artists who are residents in Qatar and to expose them to various kinds of facilities.
They will, for instance, be given different studios to work in where they will collaborate with other creative artists. They will be given access to lectures, exhibitions and they will also meet many curators. All this will help in honing their techniques.
Also, these resident artists will come in close contacts with some famous international names who frequent Qatar often like Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois etc.
A panel consisting of 6 jury members was elected to select the final 20 artists from more than 150 applicants.
The names of these final 20 artists has recently been released. The list that includes 11 qataris, is as follows –
* Sebastian Betancur-Montoya
* Tarek Darwish
* Shaha Al Khulaifi
* Lulu Al-Musfir
* Roudha Ibrahim Al-Nassr
* Aisha Nasser Al Sowaidi
These artists belong to various disciplines like art, photography, design, architecture etc.
This programme will run in 9 months cycles with a different group of artist taking part in each cycle.
An intimate get together was organized by H.E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Hala Al Khalifa (Director of the Fire Station) to congratulate these 20 residents.
Moreover, the Old Doha Fire Station Grounds will also feature, in the coming future, a park, a library, an arts and craft shop, a cinema, a plaza and a restaurant. It will also host open studio visits for art dealers in and around Doha.
