In another accomplishment that reinforces the strength of the Qatari private sector, the country has obtained the approval to establish a barcode office for Qatari products.

The approval came by the unanimous vote of the General Assembly of GS1.

Qatar has been assigned the code 630 for locally-made products, which can be traded within the country or exported.

This achievement has been made possible due to the combined efforts of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) and Qatar Development Bank (QDB).

“The barcode provided by GS1represents an important development in terms of providing an important tracking technology for locally-manufactured products from production to retail, both domestically and internationally,” the Ministry stated.

The office will be operational during the last quarter of this year, according to MOCI. It will directly coordinate with the private sector, which is the target of the office.

Establishing the barcode office is one of Qatar’s significant achievements with regard to the country’s industrial strategy, His Excellency the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari pointed out.

This reflects “the ability of the private sector to achieve self-sufficiency and compete globally,” he said.

The achievement coincided with the third anniversary of the blockade, underlined the CEO of Qatar Development Bank Abdulaziz bin Nasser Al Khalifa, noting that it was a catalyst in expanding the manufacturing of local products and services.

He said this was the reason the bank worked with the private sector and MOCI to set up the office.
