E-commerce sector indicates significant growth in Qatar
The e-commerce sector in the State of Qatar has seen a steady rate of growth over the previous months due to many factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Improvements in the IT sector are another factor that has led to this development, resulting in the rise of online shopping platforms.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC), around 350 online websites were registered with the e-commerce directory in June last year.
The number of e-commerce websites has now grown to 494, indicating the emergence of 144 new websites.
While many of these new online-only commerce platforms serve in travel, tourism, and other retail sectors, a number of e-commerce websites comprise organizations that employ hybrid models like well-known hypermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, and apparel outlets.
According to MoTC, Qatar’s e-commerce program aims to create an environment conducive to the rapid adoption of e-commerce in the country by addressing its main inhibiting factors.
It also aims to establish set protocols and governance mechanisms that will foster and encourage the future expansion of online trading in the State of Qatar.
The MoTC portal communicated that the country’s e-commerce program objectives and Road Map have been compiled through a thorough process, involving local, regional, and international businesses with a significant interest in Qatari e-commerce – from product and service creation to online purchasing, order fulfillment, and delivery.
Apart from identifying and removing key obstacles to building a successful online retail sector, the continued coordination, communication, and collaboration between all stakeholders have also been recognized as critical to the effective implementation of the program’s objectives.
Qatar had launched its very first e-commerce Trustmark, ‘Theqa’, with the aim of boosting and nurturing online retail activity in the country by creating a sense of trust and security within the e-commerce ecosystem.
