‘Qatar Al Fann’ design contest to highlight the creativity of local artists
Qatar Museums (QM) coupled with the Fire Station Artist in Residence are running a design contest that will see local artists use their creative talents to turn functional products into practical pieces of art.
The final products will include landscape furniture, carpets, and rugs, among other objects.
Titled ‘Qatar Al Fann’ or ‘Qatar Art,’ the contest is being held in collaboration with Coastal Qatar.
A jury will select designs from the pool of entries. The selected works will be featured in a design library containing details of the artists as well as the inspiration for their designs, among others.

Architects and designers will have the opportunity to use the selected designs for their projects.
Coastal Qatar will facilitate the production of the selected products for different projects.
The products may be used to beautify public spaces, hotels, offices, parks, and mosques, locally and internationally.
Khalifa Al Obaidly, Fire Station director, said the event will shine a spotlight on Qatari heritage and art and allow visitors to “interact with art rather than art being confined within the walls of art galleries and museums.”
The initiative is significant as all eyes are on Qatar while it gears up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the most prestigious global sporting event, he mentioned.
He further said that the support of sponsors is vital for art to flourish.
“Government bodies like Ashghal, Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Lusail Development, Msheireb, and Awqaf, among others, have expressed their eagerness to incorporate the selected designs in their upcoming projects," he said.
CEO Coastal Group Nishad Azeem said, “We aim to showcase Qatari products on the global stage as world-class products and we are confident of delivering these products designed by the local artists.”
