‘The Light of Hope’ aims to inspire young ones to never give up, says author
Celebrated children’s author, Basma El Khatib, yesterday said that her book titled ‘The Light of Hope’ is meant to be an inspiration for young ones, particularly for young girls, as it presents the story of a girl who can overcome obstacles in her way.
El Khatib’s book, which was published by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Press, recently won the 2019 International Book Award in the category of Children’s Mind/BodySpirit.
The book was the subject of a panel discussion organized by the Qatari Authors Forum in coordination with The Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Initially written in Arabic, the book was first published under the name ‘Kandil Alma’ in 2018. It follows the story of a young girl making her way home through a dark forest.
The girl’s journey home is laden with problems that drive her to the edge of despair. But the light of her hope becomes her strength as she navigates her way through the forest.
Her determination and grit to reach her destination echoes in the way she continues to move forward despite the difficulties that come in her path.
“I wanted to bring back the idea of a journey in children’s literature,” El Khatib said.
“I wanted to show children the necessity and possibility of overcoming obstacles through a journey that both teaches and inspires,” she added.
During the panel discussion, El Khatib underlined the significance of the message of the book.

“Children in general, and young girls in particular, will face many difficulties in their lives, but they have to overcome these difficulties and to know that they can do so,” she said.
El Khatib said she appreciated the support of HBKU Press in translating the book to English, which has allowed her work to reach a wider international audience.
‘The Light of Hope’ shows how HBKU Press’ translated works bridge gaps and enhance bilateral understanding and unity through literature.
Born in Lebanon, El Khatib has previously worked as a producer and screenwriter for Al Jazeera Children’s Channel and Baraem TV. She had published two books in the My Smart Family series and has two additional books in the pipeline with HBKU Press.
According to HBKU Press, The Light of Hope is perfect for children aged 4 to 9.
It is available on Amazon Kindle and in bookstores across Qatar in both English and Arabic.
