Qatar National Library (QNL) re-opened its doors to the public in Phase 2 of the gradual lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in Qatar.

The library has been operational with all preventive and precautionary measures in place recommended by the Ministry of Public Health.

Earlier in a press statement, QNL has stressed that said it will gradually resume its services "in bringing access to information and knowledge to its community and patrons, with safety as the utmost priority.”

In this light, QNL will be moving forward with its events for August 2020, which will be held online.

The events (listed below) will cover an array of stimulating subjects highlighting Gulf heritage.

August 10

You can learn about accessible apps for parents to support children with autism.

The apps offer visual cues to facilitate communication and help children learn numbers, colors, shapes, and sizes.

Kids can learn to better identify objects and practice social exchanges through these apps.

August 11

This event will be an online introduction to Al Nagda, which is one of the oldest Gulf heritage crafts.

Here’s your opportunity to know more about the art of embroidering local fabrics and costumes with silver and golden wires to add a smooth artistic and aesthetic touch.

The workshop will highlight the concept of Al Nagda as well as its history and important role in Gulf culture.

The tools and fabrics that were used in sewing it in the past will be shown during the workshop coupled with a presentation of drawings and types of Al Nagda designs.

The workshop will shed light on how Al Nagda is used in adding artistic touches to Al Malfaa (women’s headcovers) and Al-Bokhnoq (a sort of scarf that covers head, neck, and shoulders, mostly used by young women).

The workshop will also explain the use of Al Nagda over the years and how it has been impacted by modernity.

August 12

You can attend the webinar on “Preventive Measures to Preserve Arabic Manuscripts: Reality and Prospects.” This will be held collaboratively with the National Laboratory for Manuscript and Parchment Preservation and Restoration in Tunisia.

This event will include three lectures by experts from the National Institute of Heritage in Tunisia and is part of a series of events organized by the IFLA Regional Center for Preservation and Conservation (PAC) at the Library.

August 13

In this online event, you can learn how the current pandemic has been a catalyst for change in library services globally.

Librarians from Qatar, the Arab region, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the US will participate in this event to share their experience with providing services during these challenging times. They will also present their perspectives on the future of library services.

Dr. Milena Dobreva from UCL-Qatar, Randa Chidiac from Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon, and Alicia Yeo from Singapore National Library are among the panelists.

August 15

You can register for this workshop that will look into the impact of COVID-19 on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the blueprint by the UN, which aims to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

Presented by SDGeneration Network and Greener Future, the webinar will draw attention to what these goals are and how they can be achieved. It will also discuss the impact of COVID-19.

During this workshop, you can also learn about how one’s daily habits can help in achieving these goals.

August 18

This event will cover the textual structure of Arabic manuscript, led by Mahmoud Zaki, the Library’s Manuscript Librarian.

This is the third of a series of lectures and talks providing readings of rare historical works from QNL Heritage Library’s collection of manuscripts.

For more information regarding QNL events, you can visit the library’s official website and its social media pages.
