Unveiling another very interesting installation, Qatar Museums has brought an original part of the Berlin Wall to public viewing at Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).

In a cultural collaboration with Qatar Foundation (QF), QM took the wraps off this piece of art yesterday in recognition of the recent second anniversary of the illegal blockade imposed on Qatar.

The Berlin Wall part was gifted to Qatar during the Qatar-Germany Year of Culture in 2017.

The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 during the Cold War and separated East and West Berlin.

The concrete wall signified the physical and ideological division in Berlin and stood as a symbol of oppression for nearly three decades.

After the wall was officially torn down in 1989, artists from across the globe used graffiti to express their feelings about the division of citizens.

The two panels showcased at QNCC feature artwork by Thierry Noir, a French artist who is claimed to be the first street artist to have ever painted the Berlin Wall in 1984.

The displayed panels measure just over 2 meters wide and 3.5 meters high.

The concrete is reinforced with steel bars and holds spray-painted messages of hope, freedom, and change.

The ceremony held yesterday at QNCC saw the attendance of Hans-Udo Muzel, German ambassador to Qatar; Ahmad Musa Al Namla, acting CEO at QM; Hisham E Nourin, executive director of Strategy, Administration and Projects at the Community Development president's office, QF; and Abdulrahman Al Ishaq, head of Public Art at QM.

Al Namla said, “This remarkable object is both an authentic piece of history and a work of art, to showcase the strong relationship between the two nations, the State of Qatar and the Federal Republic of Germany, and the ongoing success of the cultural exchange program of QM.”

“In recognition of the power of art to unite people, today we unveil this second segment of the wall, to be added to our Public Art program, which brings works of art outside the walls of museums and art galleries so that QM can encourage dialogue and creativity among everyone,” he added.
