India’s first professional female tabla virtuoso to perform in Doha tonight
Hailed as a “Rhythm Queen,” “Woman of Pure Wonder,” and “National pride and an inspiration,” among other titles, India’s first professional female tabla and percussion virtuoso, Anuradha Pal, will perform in Doha this evening.

The concert, part of an Instrumental Music Ensemble known as “Jugalbandi,” has been organized by the Embassy of India in collaboration with Katara – The Cultural Village and Qatar Museums and will take place tonight at Katara’s Drama Theatre (Hall No. 16) at 6.45 pm. The second performance by the tabla genius will be tomorrow, March 2 at the Indian Cultural Center’s Ashoka Hall at 7.30 pm, reported the Qatar Tribune.
The event is free of charge but registration is required.
The musical spectacle will present interactive narrations through rhythmic dialogue on the tabla, violin and flute in addition to an ensemble between tabla, dholak,kadtaal, pakhwaj, udu, djembe, and darabuka. The performance will also highlight folklores of the Indian state of Rajasthan.Anuradha Pal is a widely admired accompanist with some of the leading Indian classical musicians and an enthusiastic collaborator with Jazz, African, Latin, Flamenco, Crossover Classical, Percussion, Pop, Rock & New-age music.
She has made India proud by being the youngest and first female Indian musician to perform at two of the most prestigious music festivals in the world – Woodstock Festival (2008) and WOMAD Festival (1999) with audiences of 4 and 1.5 lakhs respectively.
Pal’s band consists of five talented musicians – two instrumentalists, carnatic violin and Hindustan flute, one performer of Rajasthani folk songs, a keyboard player and percussionists playing various instruments, while she leads on the tabla, pakhawaj, handsonic and djembe, according to the Gulf Times.
The performances will offer a look into India’s rich musical heritage and mesmerizing cultural and artistic diversity.
Indian music has interacted and benefited from external influences over many centuries and is one of the finest examples of the binding links between India and the Arab world in the field of culture and music.
